Creating a Formatted Paper (with Embedded Citations) AND a Bibliography
RefWorks offers three ways to create formatted papers with embedded citations
and an accompanying bibliography when using Microsoft Word:
- Using One Line/Cite View
- Using Write-N-Cite
- Working Offline and Manually Putting References
into a Paper
-
Using One Line/Cite View
To place citations in a paper using One Line/Cite View:
- Open your document in MS Word
- Place the cursor where the reference should be inserted. (If you
want the citation to appear in a footnote or endnote, first create
the footnote/endnote number in your word-processing program then
place your cursor just to the right of the number.)
- In RefWorks, adjacent to the folder name toward the top of the
page, change the Switch to: drop-down menu to One
line/Cite View
- Click the Cite link next to the desired reference.
A Citation Viewer window will open with the citation
formatted in double brackets. The number to the left of the author's
name is the reference number (Ref ID) RefWorks uses to identify this
citation within your RefWorks account.
Example: {{35 Picardi,Angelo 2001;}}
- To cite a second reference in the same location, click on the Cite link
by any other reference.
- Click the Select Citation button in the Citation
Viewer window.
- From the Edit menu in Citation Viewer, select Copy (Ctrl-C).
- Return to your MS Word document and select Paste from
the word processor's Edit menu (Ctrl-V).
The citation will be inserted in your paper within double brackets.
- To cite a particular page in the source, type /snn at
the end of the content but before the semi-colon within the double
brackets, replacing nn with the actual page number.
See RefWorks
In-Text Citation Switches.
Example: Your citation is from the article "Why I (really) became a therapist" by
Albert Ellis, in the Journal of Rational-Emotive & Cognitive Behavior
Therapy vol. 22, no. 2 (2004), which runs from page 73 to page 77. You want
to cite a quotation or idea from page 75 of the article.
- Use One Line/Cite View to insert the RefWorks reference number
(Ref ID) in your MS Word document reference/footnote.
{{27 Ellis,Albert 2004;}}
- Type /s75 between 2004 and the semi-colon.
{{27 Ellis,Albert 2004/s75;}}
- Click on Clear in Citation Viewer before creating
your next citation
- Save your document
When you are ready to create
your bibliography:
- Click on Bibliography in the Citation
Viewer window or in RefWorks
- Choose an Output Style
- Choose Format Paper and Bibliography
- Browse for the document to format
- Click the Create Bibliography button
- Save your document. One Line/Cite View will automatically
create a new document with Final in the file name.
Save your document to the appropriate directory. If you need to revise
your document, add more references, etc., be sure to do so in the original document
(not the Final document).
ALWAYS check your bibliography for accuracy.
-
Using Write-N-Cite
Write-N-Cite is a software utility
that installs a Write-N-Cite button on your desktop as well as an icon on your MS Word toolbar and an MS
Word menu option under Tools for launching Write-N-Cite.
Before using Write-N-Cite, you must
first download the Write-N-Cite utility from the Tools menu
in your RefWorks account. Write-N-Cite is compatible with the following
combinations:
- Windows 98, ME, NT, 2000 and XP; Microsoft Word 2000 and up; Internet
Explorer 5.0 and up.
- Mac OS X version 10.3 or later; Microsoft Word for Mac 98 and up;
and Netscape, Mozilla.
At the present time Write-N-Cite will not work, and is not available,
in computer labs on campus. It will work on single-user computers
both on- and off-campus.
Using Write N Cite From Off Campus
When using Write-N-Cite from off campus you must follow
the procedures below in order to be authenticated as a valid Eastern
Michigan University user, even if you have successfully logged into your
RefWorks account.
- Download the Write-N-Cite plug-in from the Refworks
Tools menu
- In the Windows OS, click the Start button, highlight Programs,
highlight the RefWorks folder, and click WNC
Proxy configuration Utility
- In the box that appears for proxy server information type the
following URL [note the 'https' preceding 'refworks']: http://ezproxy.emich.edu/login?url=https://www.refworks.com/Refworks/?WNC=true
- Click OK
Note: Mac users need to restart Write-N-Cite for this proxy configuration to take effect
To place references in a paper using Write-N-Cite:
- Open your MS Word document
- Place your cursor where the reference should be inserted. (If you
want the citation to appear in a footnote or endnote rather than
in-text, create the footnote number in Word by selecting Insert/Reference/Footnote or .../Endnote.
Then place your cursor just to the right of the number.)
- Click on Write-N-Cite in the Word toolbar
- Login to RefWorks if you have not already done so
- In the Write-N-Cite window, click on Cite next
to the desired citation. The citation will be inserted in your paper
within double brackets. The number to the left of the author's name
is the reference number (Ref ID) RefWorks uses to identify this citation
within your RefWorks account.
- To cite a particular page in the source, type /snn at
the end of the content but before the semi-colon within the double
brackets, replacing nn with the actual page number.
- Use Write-N-Cite to insert the RefWorks reference number (Ref
ID) in your Word document reference/footnote.
{{27 Ellis,Albert 2004;}}
- Type /s75 between 2004 and the semi-colon.
{{27 Ellis,Albert 2004/s75;}}
- Save your document.
When you are ready to create your bibliography:
- Click on Bibliography in the Write-N-Cite window
- Choose the desired Output Style. (If your paper includes citations
within footnotes/endnotes, choose a pre-designed notes output style:
Chicago Notes and Turabian Notes. If you wish to use another Output
Style, either correct individual notes or use the Output Style editor
and create a new Output Style for notes to your specifications.)
- Click Create Bibliography
- To see formatted footnotes in Word, change your Word document to Print
Layout under View. You do not need
to view Print Layout if you just want to see the
formatted in-text/list of references.
- Save your document. Write-N-Cite will automatically
create a new Word document with Final in the file
name. If you need to revise your document, add more references, etc.,
be sure to do so in the original document (not the Final document).
Both Notes and Bibliography will be formatted according to the Output Style
you selected. In the example above, your reference/footnote to page 75 of
the article will display like this using the Turabian (Notes) output style:
Ellis, Albert. "Why I (Really) Became a Therapist," Journal
of Rational-Emotive & Cognitive
Behavior Therapy 22, no. 2 (2004): 75.
ALWAYS check your bibliography and in-text citations for accuracy.
