Hours

During fall and winter semesters, the Halle Library's normal hours of operation are:

Mondays through Thursdays, 7:30 a.m. - midnight.
Fridays: 7:30 a.m. - 6 p.m.
Saturdays: 10 a.m. - 6 p.m.
Sundays: 1 p.m. - midnight.

Reference and Research Assistance

Librarians at the Information/Reference Desk are available to answer any of your research or procedural questions. Reference assistance is available during most hours that the library is open.

During the fall and winter semesters, reference librarians staff the Information/Reference Desk:

Mondays through Thursdays, 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.
Fridays: 9 a.m.-5 p.m.
Saturdays: 10 a.m.- 5 p.m.
Sundays: 1 p.m. - 9 p.m.

During the spring and summer terms, the Information/Reference Desk opens at 9 a.m.

Individual Consultations

If you would like individual assistance starting or organizing your research, you can make an appointment with a reference librarian. To set up a meeting, contact the Information/Reference Desk (734.487.0020, x2100) or look at the list of librarian subject specialists (http://brand.emich.edu/librarian_specialists.php) and e-mail one of our librarians individually.

Tours

We offer drop-in library tours at the beginning of most semesters. In the beginning of fall and winter semesters, a list of available tour times is posted at the Information/Reference Desk and often in EMU Today. The list of drop-in tour dates is also available by calling x2100. In addition, individuals who cannot make the drop-in times but still wish for a library tour can contact Sarah Fabian (sarah.fabian@emich.edu or x2119) and schedule a convenient time to come in for a tour.

Off-Campus Access

While anyone may connect to the library catalog (http://portal.emich.edu/) from off-campus without identifying themselves, to connect to the library's subscription databases from off-campus, you need to enter your EMU e-mail/my.emich username and password. To activate your account, go to http://my.emich.edu/ and click on "How do I get my username and password?" For help creating your my.emich account, visit the ICT Help Desk on the first level of the library or call them at 734.487.2120.

Automated Retrieval Collection

Books and materials listed in the catalog as having the location code "Storage" are housed in the Automated Retrieval Collection (ARC). To request an item from the ARC, locate it in the catalog, click on the Request link near the top of the page, and follow the instructions on the screen. It usually takes less than ten minutes for items requested from the ARC to become available for check out at the Circulation Desk. For questions about the ARC, call the Information/Reference Desk at x2100.

Library Services for People with Disabilities

The University Library provides a range of services to people with disabilities. Whenever possible, services are integrated into regular library activities. People needing accommodation should stop by Client Services on the first level or call x2199.

University Archives and Special Collections

The University Archives houses a special non-circulating collection of materials, created by Eastern Michigan University administration, faculty, students and alumni, which serves as a memory bank for the history of the University. The University Archives is open Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., and is located in Room 310 on the third level of the Library. For more information, call x2300.

The Children's Literature Collection contains books appropriate for children in grades K-12. The collection includes non-fiction books, novels, nursery rhymes, short stories, poetry, plays, and biographies. The collection is located on the second level of the library and is available whenever the library is open.

The Government Documents Collection contains published government information from state, federal and international government bodies. The collection is designated by the Federal Government as a selective depository, which means that we currently receive about 50 percent of all federal publications. Government Documents is located on the library's second level and is open the same hours as the University Library.

The Map Collection consists of the Map Room, the atlas collection, and the travel and tourism materials. For information about the Map Room, including hours and services, call x2116. The atlas collection and travel and tourism materials are open the same hours as the University Library.

Book Not Found on the Shelf

When our catalog indicates a book is not checked out and you're not able to find it on the shelf where it belongs, you may ask the library staff to search for it. To request a search, take a printout of the item's catalog record to the Circulation Desk.

Reserves/Electronic Reserves

Reserve materials are high-demand items that have a short loan period or that are supplemental readings assigned by instructors. All print and multimedia reserves are kept behind the Circulation Desk on the first level.

You must have your EagleOne Card (EMU ID card) in order to check out reserve items. Loan periods are for two hours, 24 hours, three days, or seven days, depending on the type of material and how long an instructor wants it to circulate.

Interlibrary Loan

If the library does not own the materials you need for your research, we may be able to locate and acquire them for you through our interlibrary loan ( ILL) service.

You must be a current EMU student in order to use the ILL service. You should allow about two weeks for your materials to arrive. The first time you use our interlibrary loan service you will need to set up an account. Account information, policies and guidelines are available at http://illiad.emich.edu/illiad/.

Study/Meeting Rooms

Around the periphery of the second and third levels, there are Collaborative Study Rooms available for small study groups on a first-come, first-served basis. Priority for use of these rooms is given to groups, which means that if an individual is using one of the rooms, he or she may be asked to leave.

Photocopies

Photocopy machines are available on the top three floors of the library. Currently, users need a copy card to use the machines. You can purchase copy cards from the dispensers located outside of Client Services (first level) for $1.

Audio/Visual Services

The library offers a number of audiovisual services. The Audio/Video Viewing Room (room 115) houses video and DVD players, CD and cassette players and an LP player. Equipment for making transparencies and laminating materials are also available.

A librarian at the Information/Reference Desk or staff member in Client Services can answer questions concerning copy charges and material costs. Direct other questions to Brad Thompson, AV technician (x2154 or brad.thompson@emich.edu).

EagleOne Card/Library Card

Your EagleOne Card (EMU ID) serves as your library card. If you do not have an EagleOne Card, visit the EagleOne Card office located in the basement of McKenny Union (734.487.3176). Students must take their driver's license or state-issued ID and a copy of their class schedule with them to the office to receive an EagleOne Card.

Before retrieving items that are in the ARC or checking out materials, your EagleOne Card must be linked to the library system. Stop by the Circulation Desk for this quick procedure.

Checkout Limits

Most staff may have 50 items checked out at a time. However, AP and PT staff may have 100 items checked out at a time. To view a list of items checked out to you, go to the library catalog and click on Your Info/Renewals. After entering your EMU ID number and last name, you should see a list of those items you have checked out.

Proxy Patron to Borrow Library Materials

Staff have the ability to designate another person as their proxy to check out library materials. You will be able to track and verify the materials he or she checked out in your name by reviewing your own record from the library’s online catalog.

You need to fill out a Proxy Patron Application Form (available in PDF format) and send it with your designated person(s) to the library. We will be happy to make them a proxy patron for you.

The person you assign as your proxy can be a staff member, GA, or student assistant. Your proxy does need a valid university ID. When our processing is complete we will email you, not only to notify you that the proxy is ready but also as verification. Each time this person comes to the library they will have the option of checking out materials for themselves or on your behalf with their ID.

You are responsible for all materials charged out to you by your proxy. You can verify the materials charged out in your name via your personal record from the online catalog at anytime. If you notice inconsistencies within your patron record please let us know immediately.

Loan Periods

Reference materials, periodicals, and microformats are for library use only.

Loan periods differ according to the type of material being charged:
Books: 21 days
Reserves: varies, but most have a 2-hour loan period
Videos and DVDs (non-reserve): 7 days
Video Reference: 3 hours
CDs and Audiocassettes: 21 days
Journals and Reference Materials: no check out

Materials may have different loan periods. It is the borrower's responsibility to know the due date of the material checked out.

Renewals

You may renew items up to five times. Renewals can be made online using the library catalog, by clicking where it says Your Info/Renewals and entering your EagleOne Card number and last name, and checking off those items you would like renewed. Items can also be renewed in person at the Circulation Desk. Items can be renewed beyond the fifth time, but this must be done in person. Some items cannot be renewed.

Recalls/Holds

Our recall and hold policy strives to balance the needs of the current borrower with the needs of the patron requesting the recall. The current borrower is guaranteed a loan period of 21 days for books. If an item you have borrowed is recalled by another library user, we will send you a recall notice with the new due date. A hold on an item prohibits the current borrower from renewing the material so that it will become available for the other user.

To place a hold or recall on an item, locate it in our catalog, click on the Request link near the top of the screen, and follow the directions.

Fees/Fines

The fines for overdue materials are as follows:
Books: 10 cents/day
Videos (3-day and 7-day), DVDs, CDs, and Audiocassettes: 60 cents/day
Video Reference: 60 cents/hour
Reserve Materials: 60 cents/hour

Materials may have different fine rates. It is the borrower's responsibility to know the due date of the materials checked out and the fine for returning them late.

Overdue fines for library materials are listed on this chart. If items are not returned to the library, additional replacement costs and processing fees are also incurred. These additional costs and fees vary by type of material. Contact the Library's Client Services Office for specifics. (Room 116 or (734) 487-0020 x2199 or lib_clientservices@emich.edu) Should items be returned to the library after the non-return billing process has started, overdue fines and processing fees are NOT REFUNDABLE. All fines, costs, and fees must be paid in the Client Services Office on the 1st Level of Halle Library, Room 116. Unpaid fines, fees, and costs are forwarded to EMU's Student Accounting Office.

Confidentiality

It is the policy of the Halle Library that the privacy of all users shall be respected in compliance with federal and state laws and professional standards. The library will not reveal the identities of individual users or reveal what information sources or services they consult. This policy applies to all resources regardless of their format or means of delivery as well as to all services offered by the library.

Code of Conduct

Students are expected to behave courteously toward other users and library employees, and to observe all University and library rules and regulations. Those who choose to ignore these rules and regulations may be asked to leave the building.
