Area Studies
The Area Studies minor allows students to complete interdisciplinary study of one of the following geographic regions:
By completing coursework in several departments, minors in Area Studies develop an understanding of the culture, economy, geography, history, politics, and society of a world region. The geographical focus and interdisciplinary approach of the Area Studies minor provide an excellent complement to a major in a traditional academic discipline or a pre-professional program. Area Studies provides a foundation for graduate work with an area specialization or preparation for an international career.
The importance of knowledge of global regions in today’s multi-cultural global world cannot be overstated. As EMU graduates enter the workplace, they are increasingly called upon to have knowledge and awareness of differing societies and nations. Students with a minor in a specific global region have an obvious advantage in obtaining employment and advancement in a wide range of career fields including business, journalism, teaching, international law, nongovernmental organizations, and government service.
Note: The major in Area Studies was phased out in Summer 2008. Students who declared a major in Area Studies before that time have until 2014 to complete their degrees.
