Religious Studies
Religious Studies is an interdisciplinary field that seeks to use the non-sectarian methods of the academic disciplines to increase our knowledge and understanding of religion. Students minoring in Religious Studies examine religion from a variety of disciplinary perspectives by taking classes in Anthropology, Art History, Classics, History, Literature, Philosophy, Psychology, and Sociology. Through this coursework, students develop the ability to understand religious phenomenon and to critically evaluate religious claims. Ultimately, students gain broad insight into ways in which human beings have structured and given meaning to their lives, giving them a broadened perspective on human cultures and societies.
While not directed to particular careers or vocation, the Religious Studies program offers numerous opportunities for students to acquire transferable skills and knowledge. By its nature, Religious Studies requires the development of critical and analytical thought and careful expression in speech and writing. Students are encouraged to develop the essential qualities of openness and freedom of expression.
