About the Honors College
An Overview of the Honors Experience
A challenging academic program is the core of the Eastern Michigan honors experience. In the first two undergraduate years, honors students take many of their basic general education courses in small honors classes of no more than twenty students. This allows students to cover material in greater depth, more rapidly, and with more classroom interaction. Junior and senior students take honors courses offered by their departments in their major and minor fields. They also complete specially enhanced elective courses that involve original research, group projects, and other advanced work.
A rich and diverse community experience accompanies the academic experience. The Honors College is composed of talented students and committed faculty from many backgrounds who share similar goals and a broad commitment to adventurous learning and academic excellence. The focal point of the honors community is the College’s new quarters in historic Starkweather Hall.
The honors experience extends outside the classroom in community service leadership projects, field trips and social events, study abroad, membership in honors organizations, and opportunities to live in honors residence halls.
Honors recognition. Honors students can graduate with university honors, departmental honors, or both. The Honors College has its own commencement. Honors distinction is designated on the student's final transcript.
