Mae Gosaynie Najjar, the recipient of the Robert Noyce DUETS Scholarship, is a COE senior at EMU. Her choice of Biology as a major with a minor in English Language, Literature, and Writing made her the perfect candidate, due to her potential to effectively integrate science and literacy skills which high needs school districts direly need.  She has returned to university after a fifteen year career as a Biology teacher at an International school abroad to complete requirements for Michigan teacher certification.  She has also been a multiple district substitute teacher for the Westland, Dearborn, Dearborn Heights, and Northville Public School Districts throughout the past two years.  Her high academic achievements, years of experience as an educator, passion for teaching, and her respect for diversity will all be an asset to the program.  Mae will be required to teach two years in a high needs school district for each year of scholarship funding she receives.  This will ensure the introduction and preservation of highly qualified and competent math and science teachers in Michigan’s innercity school districts.

Karl S. Hamm was the recipient of the Robert Noyce DUETSs Scholarship. He is a junior at EMU and majors in Mathematics and minors in Physics. His programs of choice made him the ideal candidate for the scholarship. He transferred to EMU from Schoolcraft Community College in Livonia in the Fall of 2007. Karl will be required to teach two years in a high need school district for each year of scholarship he receives.  Karl was educated in one of the program’s partnering school districts and knows the hardships these students face. This will ensure the introduction and preservation of highly qualified and competent math and science teachers in Michigan’s inner-city school districts.
