Apply for Fall
2008-09 Academic Year Housing Application

The Housing Office welcomes all newly admitted first year, and transfer students for the coming 2008-09 school year as well as commuting EMU students to consider living on campus. Residence hall living offers convenience to classes, an environment conducive to meeting other students and an opportunity to get involved. The university expects all new incoming freshmen to live on campus unless they are commuting from their parents permanent home.

Living on campus is fun. Meeting new people and being involved in the numerous clubs and activities on campus all contribute to a successful collegiate experience. And, did you know that studies have shown that students who have an on campus living experience do better academically and are more likely to graduate? So come on in and join us for the ‘suite life’.

We encourage you to review our residence hall options (links at left) and complete the on-line contract. A $200 prepayment will need to be made when submitting the contract. Students paying with cash, check, or money order must print a copy of the contract and take or send it together with the payment to the Cashier’s Office located in 201 Pierce Hall.

The preferential housing application deadline is May 1, 2008, however, we will continue to accept contracts as long as space is available. The date we receive your application and prepayment will establish the priority date for your housing assignment. The earlier that you apply for housing the better your chances of receiving the hall of your choice.

Room Assignments

  • The information that you provide helps us to place you in an environment that most closely meets your preferences based upon the space that is available at the time you are assigned.
  • The preferences that you make do NOT constitute a contractual obligation.
  • It is not always possible to accommodate all of a student’s requests. No guarantees can be made.

Roommate Preferences

  • The Housing Office makes every effort to honor requests for specific roommates, however, both students absolutely MUST request each other or a placement together will not be made.
  • Contract and payment must be received prior to May 1, 2008 to assure a placement together.
  • Students who request each other must submit their contract and $200 prepayment at the same time. Not doing so will affect a placement together.
  • Placement of mutually requested roommates will be made ONLY if space is available at the time the contract and prepayment is received by the Housing Office.

Assignment Notification

  • Students who apply by the preferential deadline of May 1, can expect to receive an assignment letter and roommate information via their EMU e-mail account around the 1st of August.
  • Assignment letters for those who submit after May 1 likely will receive their information later depending on the date the contract was received.

Contract Cancellations

  • Students who find it necessary to cancel their contract must do so in writing to the Housing Office at housing@emich.edu using your my.emich email account. Cancellation requests sent from another account are not considered official and will not be honored. This validates your identity and helps reduce the risk of fraudulent requests.
  • Cancellations must be received prior to the dates below to be eligible for credit:
    • Before May 1, 2008: $200
    • Before July 1, 2008: $100
    • After July 1, 2008: No refund
  • Contracts submitted after May 1st are subject to the same credit schedule as above.
  • Contracts submitted after July 1st would receive no credit if cancellation were to occur.

Financial Aid

  • Students, who expect to use financial aid funds as a means of covering college expenses, must complete a FAFSA form.
  • The FAFSA needs to be submitted well before the start of the fall semester to ensure that funds are available for the school year. Recommended deadline is March 1, 2008.
  • FAFSA information can be found at www.fafsa.ed.gov
