HLED 460: Concepts of Sexuality Education
Catalog Description: This course examines the biological and behavioral dynamics of human sexuality and sexuality education with the identification and examination of contemporary issues. Emphasis will be placed on sexuality education in schools and the community. Methods include: lecture, small group discussion, computer applications, and student presentations.
HLED 490: Drug Use and Abuse
Catalog Description: This course offers a broad overview of drug use. Historical perspectives of current problems, pharmacology of drugs commonly used and abused, physiological and psychological factors related to abuse, substance abuse prevention programs, treatment, and drugs and the law are all addressed. Methods include: lecture, small group discussion, student presentations.
HLED 495: Health Education for Diverse Populations
Catalog Description: This course is designed to help students identify, and develop, effective health education programming that will lend to the reduction of health disparities which exist in diverse populations. Methods will include, discussion and classroom activities designed to enhance application of course content.
HLED 550: Theoretical and Philosophical Foundations of Health Education
Catalog Description: An overview of the history, philosophies, ethical considerations and theories underlying health education practice. Emphasis will be placed on current and future roles and functions of professional health education in a variety of settings. Methods will include, discussion and classroom activities designed to enhance application of course content.
HLED 555: Current Health Issues and Trends
Catalog Description: An investigation of recent literature, research and practices in health education. Emphasis will be placed on applications to community, school and organizational settings. HLED 558: Health Education Methods and Materials
Catalog Description: An examination of the methods and materials utilized in delivery of health education. Emphasis will be placed on educational strategies for individuals and groups in a variety of settings. HLED 560: School Health Education Programming and Curriculum
Prerequisites: HLED 550 and HLED 555
Catalog Description: This course is designed to provide school health personnel with an opportunity to study and understand the function of the Coordinated School Health Program, with special emphasis on the classroom teacher. Methods will include, discussion and classroom activities designed to enhance application of course content.
HLED 562: Health Education Program Planning
Prerequisites: HLED 550 and HLED 555
Catalog Description: A study on the various models and processes used in the development of health education programs. Students will gain skills necessary to plan health education programs for a wide variety of target populations and settings. Methods will include, discussion and classroom activities designed to enhance application of course content.
HLED 565: Women’s Health
Catalog Description: This class will provide an integrated, multidisciplinary approach to women’s health. Methods include: lectures, discussion, cooperative group activity, self-awareness activities and the use of the World Wide Web.
HLED 570: Measurement in Health Education
Catalog Description: This course is designed to provide students with the knowledge and skills necessary to identify, develop and conduct protocols to assess individual and group needs for health education as well as program impact and outcomes. Catalog Description: A practical application of health education programming principles to a specific problem identified by the student and supervised by a faculty committee.
HLED 692: Thesis in Health Education

Catalog Description: An intensive study into the opportunities and challenges encountered while planning, implementing, and evaluating health education programs. Students will participate in problem solving activities requiring the synthesis and integration of theory, principles, research knowledge and skills gained through previous academic preparation.

HPHP 505: Basic Statistics
Catalog Description A study of statistical techniques including descriptive and inferential parametric/non-parametric tests.
HPHP 677: Research, Theory and Design
Catalog Description: An examination of qualitative and quantitative research, the components of a research proposal, research methodologies (descriptive, analytical, experimental, philosophical, and historical), reliability and internal and external validity, and descriptive and inferential statistics as related to movement and health sciences and the development of the first three chapters of a thesis proposal.
