Physical Activity Courses

PEGN 101 Weight Control and Fitness (2 cr) - The purpose of the course is to relate to pertinent information about the effects of exercise and nutrition upon the human organism to understand it's structure, function, capabilities and limitations, and to experience some of the effects of exercise and improved nutitition.

PEGN 102 Aerobic Dance (1 cr) - A course in which the student can experience physical conditioning and fitness, utilizing dance and music as the medium for aerobic exercise.

PEGN103 Ballroom Dance (1 cr) - Students will learn theory, technique, and beginning patterns in merengue, swing, foxtrot, waltz, tango and ballrooming.

PEGN 104 Cardio Kickboxing (1 cr) - A non-contact aerobic workout with the dynamic punching and kicking of the Martial Arts and boxing. Cardio Kick movements are very easy to follow and are choreographed to music.

PEGN 108 Basketball (1 cr) - The course is designed for the novice skilled player. The purpose is to learn the basics of individual and team play with emphasis on fundamentals.

PEGN 110 Beginning Tae Kwon Do (1 cr) - An introductory course showing the various techniques used in the art of self-defense. Students learn discipline, self-confidence and a vigorous physical activity.

PEGN 111 Volleyball (1 cr) - The course will provide opportunties to develop/improve basic volleyball skills, strategies, and concepts via lecture, demonstration and laboratory experiences. The course is designed to enhance the student's performance and increase the enjoyment of participation.

PEGN 115 Karate (1 cr) - This is a beginner's course in the art of self-defensive movements. The aim of self defense is to protect oneself from attack to the point where escape is possible. The student will be introduced to a variety of defensive movements.

PEGN 119 Women's Gymnastics (1 cr) - An introductory course in the understanding of and participation in the various tumbling routines and apparatus used by women. Emphasis is on the ability to develop new skills and to provide an increase in the physical fitness of the participants.

PEGN 122 Men's Gymnastics I (1 cr) - This is a basic men's gymnastic skills class, and an introduction to the sport of gymnastics.

PEGN 124 Fitness Walking (1 cr) - This course is designed to provide students with basic knowledge of physical fitness and healthy lifestyle principals. Power walking is a program that trains muscular strength and endurance, flexibility, cardiovascular endurance and promotes total body health.

PEGN 126 Conditioning Activities (1 cr) - A beginning course designed for students limited or no experience in physical fitness conditioning activities. A variety of activities wil be used to promote the skills and knowledge for individual use.

PEGN 128 Judo (1 cr) - A beginning coures in the martial arts of Judo. Students will learn its history, as well as being able to demonstrate the various techniques. (www.emich.edu/studentorgs/judo)

PEGN 130 Assault and Rape Prevention (1 cr) - A course designed to develop skills that will help a person to (1) recognize possible dangers to property and self, (2) identify alternatives to physical agression, and (3) use appropriate self-defense techniques when physical agression cannot be avoided.

PEGN 140 Marching Band (1 cr) - A class taken by "Permission Only" for the Music and Dance Department. Those accepted will be part of EMU Marching Band and are expected to be available for practices and performances.

PEGN 142 Racquetball and Paddleball (1 cr) - Students will learn the fundamental skills of forehand, backhand, and serving. The student will also be responsible for learning the basic rules, strategies and scoring before being given an opportunity to compete with fellow classmates.

PEGN 143 Fencing (1 cr) - An introductory course in the history of fencing and the fundamental skills and techniques for use of the foil. Emphasis is placed on the individual body movements and skills for a novice.

PEGN 145 Cross Country Skiing (1 cr) - A course to give the student fundamental knowledge of cross-country skiing, covering: equipment, basic skills, waxing techniques, proper dress, and survival. Students furnish their own equipment, or rental from the recreation area.

PEGN 146 Beginning Snow Skiing (1 cr) - A class designed to provide instruction in the basic fundamentals of downhill snow skiing at a recreational level.

PEGN 148 Tennis (1 cr) - This course is designed to promote skill development in the basic fundamentals of downhill snow skiing at at recreational level.

PEGN 149 Badminton (1 cr) - A beginning course in badminton to develop sufficient skill and knowledge to permit a person to enjoy it as a recreational sport. Students will learn the basic badminton strokes, scoring procedures, rules and etiquette.

PEGN 150 Golf (1 cr) - An introductory course focusing on basic instruction on the golf swing, woods and iron play, chipping, putting, and playing from the sand. The course also covers golf etiquette and discusses different types of equipment used in today's game. The commercial establishment charges an extra fee.

PEGN 151 Bowling (1 cr) - This course is designed for the beginning bowler. The student will learn basic knowledge of all aspects of bowling to include skills, scoring, rules, etiquette and common conversions. The commercial establishment charges an extra fee.

PEGN 152 Sailing (1 cr) - This course is designed for the novices/beginning sailor. The course will provide opportunities to develop basic sailing skills via lecture, demonstration , and practical experience.

PEGN 153 Swimming (1 cr) - A course for those who cannot swim or are novice swimmers, to enhance their ability to enjoy water and its recreational fitness. The students will learn to practice safe habits and increase their knowledge and ability to swim using a variety of elementary strokes.

PEGN 177/178/179 Special Topics (1/2/3 crs)- A one, two or three-hour experimental course subject to be listed by title.

Bicycle Touring (1 cr) – This course is an introduction to the bicycle as a form of recreation, and cycling as a form of exercise.  Students will learn to maximize the pleasure of bicycling, safety awareness, cycling etiquette, bicycle maintenance, and training components will be covered.  Other topics include the discussion of health benefits of cycling such as cardiovascular endurance, muscular strength and endurance, flexibility, and cycling as a life-long form of exercise.

Core Training (1 cr) – Looking for a leaner midsection?  Core Strength Training focuses on strengthening the body’s core which consists of the abs, back, and trunk.  Improved posture, strength, and reduced risk of injury during everyday activities are but a few of the benefits of this class.  Students will be introduced to the fundamentals of Core Training as well as the latest information and equipment to enhance and challenge their core strength.  (Pilates, Core Board training, Stability Ball, and Dura-disc training).  This workshop is ideal for the health conscious exerciser and has benefits for physical education teachers and coaches.

Judo II (1 cr) – Judo II is designed to further familiarize students with physical Judo theory and technique, specifically go-no-sen jujitsu and katame no kata.  The physiological principles tantamount to Judo are discussed.  Further, functional methodology in regard to Judo Training methods in presented in traditional fashion and at the same time offering a new concept of training (www.emich.edu/studentorgs/judo)

Kendo (1 cr) – This course is designed to introduce you to Kendo and the philosophy behind the Japanese culture of Bushido.  Kendo is a martial art form that is focused on the development of the spirit as well as the physicality of the body.  This course is a starting point on the way of the sword and will hopefully allow you to gain a better perspective on Kendo and your own life.

Kung Fu (1 cr) – A comprehensive awareness of one’s body will be developed through the practice of Yin Style Baguazhang.  The training calls for considerable engagement of the mind as exacting structural and movement requirements are worked toward.  During partnered training, spatial relationships, sensitivity to an opponent’s force, and adaptive strategies will be focused upon.

Nia (1 cr) – Nia is a holistic approach to lifestyle and fitness, that blends movements and principles from dance, healing arts, and martial arts.  It enhances endurance, strength, flexibility, and balance in body, mind, emotions, and spirit (www.nia-nia.com)

Rape Aggression Defense Systems (1 cr) – Objectives of this course are to identify characteristics of perpetrators and assault situations, learn physical skills to take action to reduce the risk of experiencing an assault, and to build self confidence and self esteem.

Spinning (1 cr) – An indoor cycling class that simulates biking outdoors.  Each class offers a variety of workouts including cardiovascular, strength, hills, and much more.

Silat Tuo Minang (1 cr) – Objectives of this course are to introduce students to the culture, traditions, and martial arts movements specific to West Sumatra, Indonesia, as well as to educate students to both Silat Tuo’s internal and external elements of healing and self defense, respectively.

Water Aerobics (1 cr) – This class will incorporate exercises designed to increase cardiovascular fitness, flexibility, strength, and muscular endurance, and will be performed in both the shallow and deep areas of the pool.  This is a great class for students with joint problems, and students who want a pool-based class that does not involve swimming.  Fitness principles will be learned and practiced.

PEGN 180 Yoga (1 cr) - This course is designed to teach the student the five key elements of Yoga. It will include exercises, breathing, relaxation and meditation techniques.

PEGN 190 Extramural Club Sports (1 cr)- The purpose of this course is to promote physical activity by participation in Extramural Club Sports recognized by Campus Life, and the Rec/IM Department. Students will be required to attend all practices and club organized competitions throughout the semester.

PEGN 193 Swing Dance I (1 cr) - This course is designed to teach students the theory technique and beginning patterns in triple time and single west coast swing, hustle , and ballrooming.

PEGN 201 Fitness Activities (1 cr) - This course is designed to provide students with a background in physical fitness, exercise and health principals and practices. These principles will be applied to personal exercise and health programs through activities such as target heart rate monitoring, body measurements, posture analysis, energy intake and expenditure assessments.

PEGN 203 Latin Dance (1 cr) - This course is designed to provide students with a technical and stylistic foundation in Latin dance. This is a beginning level course.

PEGN 210 Lifetime Wellness and Fitness (2 crs) - A lecture course covering the essential elelments of wellness and fitness. The course is geared toward entering freshman.

PEGN 215 Tai Chi (1 cr) - This course is designed to teach student the simplified "24-forms" Tai Chi Chuan which was strandardized in China and has been popularized around the world.

PEGN 224 Jogging (1 cr) - A course designed to provide the student with endurance training experience through jogging. The students will receive information regarding the control of intensity, duration, and frequency of endurance type exercise in the promotion of optimal cardio respiratory fitness.

PEGN 226 Weight Training (1 cr) - A beginning course for the student to gain knowledge and skills that will permit a novice to organize a personal weight training, and measure the effects of such a program on his/her physical fitness components.

PEGN 229 Varsity Soccer (1 cr) - A planned program to teach and develop the advanced skills and strategies necessary for participatoin in the collegiate level competition of soccer. Permission required.

PEGN 230 Varsity Cross Country (1 cr) - A planned program to teach and develop the advance skills and strategies necessary for participation in the collegiate level competition of Cross Country. Permission required.

PEGN 231 Varsity Football (1 cr) - A planned program to teach and develop the advance skills and strategies necessary for participation in the collegiate level competition of Football. Permission required.

PEGN 232 Varsity Basketball (1 cr) - A planned program to teach and develop the advance skills and strategies necessary for participation in the collegiate level competition of Basketball. Permission required.

PEGN 233 Varsity Swimming (1 cr)- A planned program to teach and develop the advance skills and strategies necessary for participation in the collegiate level competition of Swimming. Permission required.

PEGN 277/278/279 Special Topics (1/2/3 crs)

Business Golf (1 cr) - A course designed to educate students on how to use golf as a business skill to enhance their careers.  The course will discuss how to initiate and build relationships with clients, proper etiquette on and off the golf course, the selection of equipment and accepted dress codes, and an overview of the process of planning and implementing a personal business golf career strategy.

PEGN 310 Intermediate Tae Kwon Do (1 cr) - A continuum of the beginning Tae Kwon Do course designed for students who have mastered the initial skils and wish to advance their knowledge and skills towards a highter TKD ability class belt.

PEGN 348 Basic Scuba Diving (1 cr) - A fun seven week program that involves learning to dive in EMU's pools and gets you ready for full certification. Good for the adventure and careers in marine biology, scuba instructor, resort operations, and underwater exploration.
