RECR100 Introduction to Recreation & Leisure

Course description: Recr100 is a general orientation to the roles and purposes of leisure and recreation in a pluralistic society from broad social and cultural perspectives. The course also emphasizes the development of a personal perspective of leisure and recreation both as an individual and as a member of a social group: family, relatives, and friends. Participation in leisure/recreation activities provides holistic benefit packages that enhance the individual throughout life. The many facets of the scientifically based benefit packages are discussed. Students identify and distinguish between leisure, recreation, and play. Students examine the work ethic and the leisure ethic and the importance of both in the preservation of self and society. Current social values are identified and their impact on free time and the quality of life. An historical overview of leisure and the development of the recreation movement are provided to obtain a perspective of the growth and importance of the movement and its impact on society. The role and influence of technology on leisure and recreation are examined over time and its effect on free time. Leisure in different cultures is discussed as a global phenomenon.
RECR260 Recreation Leadership

Course description: Methods and techniques of group and individual leadership skills at three levels: direct face-to-face leadership, supervision, and management. An overview of conceptual and theoretical components of the leadership process and practical application of various leadership methods and procedures in a cross section of leisure service settings are presented. Lectures, discussion and experiential learning.
RECR280 Camping

Course description: Recr280 is an introductory course for students interested in outdoor adventure and/or general participation in an outdoor recreation activity. This course prepares students to live in an outdoor environment in developed or undeveloped camp settings. The course is oriented to provide students the opportunity to work together as a team and develop comraderie in sharing an outdoor site over an extended time period. Students accomplish prescribed outdoor tasks as a group, for example, compass walk, setting up a campsite, building a campfire, knot tying, and cooking out-of-doors. The course covers essential first aid: water purification, hypothermia, and basic foot care.
RECR290 Practical Research in Recreation

Course description: Student learn and apply research methodology, design, sampling, and measurement to solve problems related to the provision of social services. Students design data collection instruments, collect and code data. Data are analyzed using appropriate statistical techniques. Results are interpreted and a research report is submitted. The course involves lecture, discussion, and lab work.
RECR370 Leisure Facility Design & Management

Course description: This course is of interest to all students involved in managing a public facility. The course will cover information needed to plan, develop, and coordinate a public facility. Lecture, discussion, guest speakers and field trips are utilized.
RECR390 Outdoor Recreation

Course description: This is an introductory course in outdoor recreation. The student will become familiar with the history and development of the outdoor recreation movement. The student will acquire knowledge of outdoor recreation agencies in the public sector: their mission, legal mandates, philosophy of natural resources management, and management problems and opportunities. The student will acquire knowledge of tools outdoor recreation resource managers utilize to manage outdoor recreation resources. In addition, the student will become familiar with controversial issues in outdoor recreation resources management.
RECR450 Park Planning & Design

Course description: This course provides an overview the history of park planning and design, the purpose of park planning, types of park plans, the planning process, systems and site-level planning, use of recreation standards, and work program design. Students learn when and how to select consultants. Students learn principles of site design, site analysis, use area relationships, and site plan development and interpretation. The lab component incorporates maps and aerial photos, drawing and perspective, computer drawing, site analysis, design, and presentation. Lecture, discussion, lab, and field trips.
RECR460 Recreation Administration

Course description: This course introduces students to organizational management approach and structures. Students learn how to design management objectives. Fund raising and fund development methods are presented. Volunteer program design is discussed. The course emphasizes marketing of leisure and social services. Pricing of products and services is discussed. Administrative responsibility and ethics are covered. Lecture and discussion.
RECR465 Recreation Management

Course description: This course introduces students to the strategic planning process as a management tool for nonprofit organizations. Students learn methods for involving the public in management decision making. Students design mission statements for nonprofits. Students assess the role of leaders in organizations. Students learn how to develop leadership using a leadership model. The role of ethics in organizations is discussed. Lecture and discussion.
