Q: I took a wellness and fitness class at a different university. How do I make it count for the physical education graduation requirement at EMU?
A: You need to speak with Mrs. Suzanne Zelnik-Geldys about a transfer equivalency. She makes her own appointments, but you can email her at szelnikg@emich.edu, or call her at 487-2833.
Q: How do I get an override for a class?
A: You need to get the instructor’s permission by either of the following methods:
1) Pick up an override slip from 318 Porter, fill it out completely, have your instructor sign it, and return it to 318 Porter
2) Have your instructor email the department secretary with your name, E number, semester, course name and number, the CRN, and what kind of permission they are giving.
3) Graduate student overrides: Any graduate student wanting to take a PEGN class must secure an override from szelnikg@emich.edu. State in the e-mail that you do not intend to use Graduate student financial aid to pay for the PEGN course and that you realize the PEGN credits cannot count towards your graduate degree. Include your name, E number and the class you wish to take.
Q: Are you hiring Graduate Assistants for the present/coming school year?
A: We only hire Graduate Assistants from within our school’s majors. If you are an HPHP major, speak with your advisor about any GA appointments that may be available.
Q: How long does it take to hear back from EMU regarding my admission to the University?
A: Once all your application materials have been received, the Office of Admissions forwards your information to the School of Health Promotion and Human Performance for an admission decision. Typically the process takes anywhere from 4 to 6 weeks.
Q: I think I want to do an Independent Study course. Where do I start?
A: Independent Study courses are for students who have an interest in a particular topic and want to do a detailed project or research paper on that topic. Students are responsible for designing a proposal and securing faculty sponsorship. The front desk in HPHP has guidelines for creating proposals, and a form for officially registering for the Independent Study with your advisor’s permission.
Q: I’m having trouble registering in My.Emich. What do I need to do?
A: If you are experiencing problems accessing registration through your My.Emich account, contact the ICT helpdesk at 487-2120.
Q: I need to make an appointment with an advisor. Can you do it for me?
A: Faculty make their own appointments, so you will need to contact them directly for an appointment.
Q: How do I get an advisor assigned to me?
A: For all programs except Health Education: Come into HPHP in 318 Porter and fill out an Advisor Request Form. This will be given to the Program Coordinator, and they will assign you advisor and post it on the bulletin board on the right wall as you come into the office. This usually takes about 2 weeks.
For Health Education- visit the Health Education Advising webpage for information.
Q: I was admitted to an HPHP graduate program with a “Conditional” or “Non-Degree” admission status, and I have met the requirements for the condition to be lifted. How do I change my status to “Degree Admission”?
A: Contact the Graduate Advising Office (734.487.4444) and let them know that your status needs to be updated. If you have met the requirements, then the conditions will be lifted and you will be granted “Degree Admission” status.

A: Fill out and submit the Graduate Change of Enrollment form.
Q: How long do I have to finish my Graduate Program?
A: Students are allowed six years from the time they start their Core Courses to finish their program.
