Matt Archer

MattMatt Archer is a graduate of the University of South Carolina, with a Bachelor of Arts in Music, and cognates in Education and Dance. A first generation college student firmly rooted in the arts and in social justice issues, he has working experience from several different public flagship and private universities, having left a collegiate Information Technology/Student Services career of 7 years to return to school in order to teach and help others. He strongly believes in equitable university affairs, in the empowerment of others, in the capacity of people to achieve their goals, and in actualizing integrity and values. He is grateful for the opportunity to serve as a UNIV Instructor and Success Coach, and hopes to soon continue his teaching experience with a Ph.D.

Clyde Barnett III

Clyde Barnett is in his 3rd year of the Ph.D. program in educational leadership here at EMU. He has worked in higher education for 7+ years in various functional areas teaching and providing support to students. Additionally, Clyde has worked in corporate marketing for 2 years. He holds an undergraduate degree in marketing from the University of Michigan-Flint campus and two graduate degrees in education from EMU. Clyde has developed a duty and sense of obligation to serve students. He has worked in partnership with students to manage and overcome problems, support development, and provide knowledge/skills to achieve. Further, he is a staunch advocate of storytelling for social justice as reminders to consider various perspectives and think in inclusive ways. Clyde is joining the Holman Success Center team this fall as an Instructor and Success Coach and he is very excited to engage with incoming students!

LaRae Brannon

LaRae Brannon is currently completing her master's degree in counseling here at EMU, with a focus in school counseling, and holds a Bachelor of Science in psychology. She is a firm believer that this world would be a better place if everyone took the time to find their passion and pursued a career doing what they love. This belief guides her in helping others discover themselves and builds the foundation of her success coaching, counseling, and role as a UNIV 101L3 and UNIV 179L3 instructor.

Alesha Carter

Alesha is excited to begin her third year of grad school in the Clinical Mental Health program. She is also looking forward to returning this fall to the Holman Success Center as a Graduate Assistant. Alesha has worked with infants and toddlers for 7 years in Early Childhood Education, but is eager for the experience of working with collegiate students. As a UNIV instructor and Success Coach, Alesha hopes to make lasting connections with her students and to be successful at guiding them through the first year of college.

Fernanda Carvalhofd

Fernanda Carvalho is a first-generation college student and is currently pursuing her Masters degree in Teaching English to Speakers of other Languages (TESOL). Her bachelor degree is in Portuguese and English Language and Literature. She is from Brazil and worked as a Fulbright Scholar at Jackson College, MI, in 2015. Teaching is her passion because she believes it is a powerful way to change the world.

Kerry C. Davis, IIkd

Kerry C. Davis, II is a second year Master’s student in the Higher Education/Student Affairs Program at Eastern Michigan University. He graduated from Central Michigan University with a Bachelors in Broadcast & Cinematic Arts. Kerry has experience working as a Peer Mentor during his undergrad years and last year he served as the Hall Director for Brown-Munson Apartments. Kerry loves working with students and is motivated to see them grow both inside and outside the classroom. He takes pride in leading by example and making connections with his students as well as guiding them on this journey called “college.”

Awil Jama is currently a graduate student pursing a degree in higher education student affairs in the college of education. He is in his second year of the HESA program, focusing on academic advising, international students and student athletes. Awil is a firm believer in never settling for anything but your best and trusting & believing in God. Whenever Awil is not success coaching or teaching UNIV, you can found him hitting the gym or playing basketball & soccer. Also spending time with his family and friends, trying to make them laugh and smile. Awil is passionate about helping, inspiring and mentoring first generation students in succeeding in their college endeavors.

Veronica Konglim

Veronica Konglim is currently pursuing her PhD in educational studies. She is an alumna of the TESOL Veronica Konglimprogram here at EMU and a former Fulbright scholar. She enjoys solving crime with the CSI, SVU and NCIS teams. She is also the mother of an 18-month- old tiny human who is full of energy. Veronica loves meeting new people and helping students find purpose in their academic careers. She pushes students to try out different things, discover their strengths and weaknesses and then use these skills to develop both academic goals and global citizenship.

Shondra L. Marshall

Shondra L. Marshall obtained her Bachelor and Master degrees from Michigan State University. While completing her Masters degree in Teaching and Curriculum she received a literacy and language instruction specialization. She is currently in the Educational Studies: Urban Education Ph.D. program at Eastern Michigan University. Her research interests include examining pedagogy, academic performance, educational experiences, teacher preparation and literacy activities of African American students. She also has interest surrounding racial socialization and parental influences of African American students. Shondra hopes to encourage and empower all students to reach their full potential.

Courtney Morris

Courtney Morris graduated from Eastern Michigan University with a Bachelor of Science in Health Administration and a Minor in Social Work in 2015. After graduating, Courtney served as a College Advisor at River Rouge High School where her primary responsibilities consisted of successfully transitioning the senior class into post-secondary institutions and career opportunities. Courtney is pursuing a Master of Arts in Educational Leadership - Higher Education Student Affairs with a certificate in Academic Advising and Community College Leadership. She is the UNIV Instructor/Success Coach as well as the Academic Affairs Chair for the SisterHOOD Initiative: A program that focuses on retaining and graduating women of color. Courtney believes that building connections through mentorship, experiences beyond the classroom, and resources are leading factors in student success.

Amelia Parnis

Amelia Parnis is completing her final semester in the Higher Education Student Affairs (HESA) graduate Amelia Parnisprogram. She earned her Bachelor’s of Science at EMU in English Language, Literature and Writing, minoring in Psychology. In addition to her role as a Success Coach, Amelia works as a UNIV 101L3 instructor and the Graduate Coordinator for HSC’s Supplemental Instruction (SI) and Drop-In Tutoring programs. She finds joy in helping students discover their unique skills and abilities that will help them succeed in life. In her free time, she likes to travel, attend concerts, and run her blog. She loves iced coffee, cacti, and sunglasses.

 


Melissa Quasunella

Melissa Quasunella is pursuing her Master's in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages 

(TESOL) at Eastern. She graduated with her Bachelor's Degree in Spanish from Alma College and is a certified Spanish and English teacher in the State of Michigan. Upon graduating, she moved to Spain to teach English for two academic years. Last course she taught Spanish at two high schools in Metro-Detroit. Melissa is passionate about working with first year students at EMU because she believes that the college campus serves as a place for self-discovery. She hopes to introduce her students to a variety of campus resources so they can start building their resume and exploring their career aspirations.

Nafeesah Symonette is a proud alum of Eastern Michigan University where she acquired her Bachelors of Fine Arts with a concentration in Painting and Teaching Certification K-12. Upon graduation she moved to Washington, D.C. where she taught high school Art and assisted seniors with college preparation for 15 years. Nafeesah is back and beyond excited to be working as a UNIV Instructor and Success Coach. Currently she is pursuing a Master’s degree in Art Administration and hopes to continue her academic pursuits in the Urban Education Ph.D. program. Nafeesah is a happily married mommy of two itty bittys and relishes watching her babies discover life. In her nonexistent free time, Nafeesah enjoys portrait painting and kickboxing!

Cesar Vargas Hello! My name is Cesar Vargas! I worked for the Holman Success Center throughout graduate school these past two years. I graduated from the University of Michigan in 2015 with a double major in Sociology and Latino Studies and recently earned my Master's in Educational Leadership. My passion is to serve others by simplifying the information I struggled with throughout my journey as a first generation immigrant/ college student. I hope to provide a brave space for students to explore their decision making using the internal voice. Furthermore, my framework will be used to support, and encourage all students to step outside their comfort zone. Fun facts; I enjoy playing soccer, socializing with new people, any form of art, cooking/eating and spending time with my family.
