Editing Favorites Activity
Managing your Favorites in Internet Explorer

Let's practice using the Favorites file and work more with favorites and favorite folders.

1. Open your Favorites file.
Open your Favorites file by either clicking on Favorites (in the pulldown menu) or clicking on the Favorites icon (on the toolbar near the top of the browser screen), then choose Organize Favorites.

2. Delete a Favorite and a Favorite Folder.
There will be times when you want to delete a favorite. For instance, perhaps you have "favorite-ed" a site mistakenly, or you are no longer interested in it, so you want to delete it. Click on Favorites on the pull down menu or the Favorites icon, and choose Organize Favorites. Left click on the favorite to select it and then either use the Delete button or right click and choose Delete from the pop-up window.

Delete Favorite

You delete a folder the same way you delete a single favorite. However, when you delete the folder, you will be deleting all of it's contents, so make sure that you want to get rid of both the folder and everything in it. Select a folder by single clicking on it. If the folder has more than one bookmark, you may have to click again to collapse the folder. Left click on the folder to select it, and then either use the Delete button or right click and choose Delete from the pop-up window.

Tip If you delete a folder or a favorite by accident, you can't use Undo, so think twice before you delete, especially folders!

3. Move favorites and folders around within the Favorites file.
Before we learn to reorder our favorites, let's create two new folders in our Favorites file. With your Favorites file open (You've clicked "Organize Favorites as above), click on Create Folder. Name the folder "Fun Stuff". Click OK. We have created a folder called "Fun Stuff." Now, create another folder using your first name.

Create New Folder

Next, you can move any existing favorite into a folder by left-clicking on it and dragging it into the appropriate folder.

Once you have placed a favorite in a folder, if you don't see it, try opening the folder by single clicking on it. You should now see the favorite displayed below the folder. Single click on the folder again to "collapse", or hide it's contents.

You can also move the folders. Select the folder with your name on it by left clicking on it and then drag the folder to above the Fun Stuff folder.

4. Save your Favorites folder to a flash drive or to your desktop.
If you want to transfer all or part of your favorites to another machine, for example from home to school, it is easy to do with a flash drive. For this activity, if you do not have a flash drive, you can save the Favorites folder to your computer’s desktop.

Plug in your flash drive , then, from within your favorites file, left click to select a favorite folder. If you want all of your favorites, choose the favorites folder. Right click, and choose Send To... and then save to your flash drive(or Desktop, if you aren't using a flash drive.)

Save to Drive

5. Use your saved Favorites file.
If you have saved your Favorites file on a flash drive and you would like to use it on a different computer that has Internet Explorer, it is easy to do. Insert your disk, and choose File from the pull down menu, then Import and Export

Import and Export

If you want to access your favorites using Netscape Navigator, you will import the favorites into your bookmarks file.

Tip Caution: always save a copy of your original Bookmarks file (use a file name other than bookmark.html, such as bookmark_backup) to prevent unintentional loss.

Open your bookmark file: Go to File on the pulldown menu within the bookmarks file, then Import Bookmarks, and then choose the favorites file from your disk. The favorites should appear at the end of your bookmarks file.
