Managing your Bookmarks in Netscape (Windows)

1. Open your Bookmarks file.
Let’s first practice opening your Bookmarks file. To do this, click on the Bookmarks button on the Netscape Navigator toolbar, then at the pop-up window, select Edit Bookmarks:

Manage Bookmarks

A window will appear and it should look like this:

Bookmarks

Throughout Information for Today, we will refer to this as your Bookmarks file being open. The only time you can edit the contents of a Bookmarks file is when the Bookmarks file is open.

2. Delete a bookmark.
There will be times when you want to delete a bookmark. For instance, perhaps you have bookmarked a site twice, so you want to delete the duplicate. With your Bookmarks file open, left click on the bookmark to select it and then right click and choose Delete Bookmark from the pop-up window.

3. Create folders in your Bookmarks file.
Folders help you organize what you find. For example, you may wish to create a folder for each subject or unit you teach and then place corresponding bookmarks within the appropriate folder. With your Bookmarks file open, click on the 'new folder' icon:

New Folder

. This will bring up the Bookmark Properties window where you can name the folder in the Name text box. Click OK. We have created a folder called "Fun Stuff."

Fun Stuff

Next, you can move any existing bookmark into a folder by selecting it and dragging it into the appropriate folder.

Move Bookmark

Double click on the new folder you've just created to open it. You will know that the "Fun Stuff" folder is presently open because the "-" sign directly to the left of the folder that indicates the folder is open and contains a bookmark. (Your are probably already familiar with this system from using Windows Explorer.) Once you have placed a bookmark in a folder, try opening the folder by double clicking on it. You should now see the bookmark displayed below the folder.

Tip Did you know that you can add a bookmark and file it in a bookmark folder all at the same time? Repeat the steps to bookmark a site. Instead of selecting Add Bookmark choose File Bookmark, navigating to the appropriate folder.

You can also move the folders. Select the folder and then left click and drag the folder to the desired location. It is also possible to delete a folder. Left click on the folder to select it and then right click and choose Delete Bookmark from the pop-up window.

Tip If you delete a folder or a bookmark by accident, you can immediately retrieve it by going to Edit and Undo. However, if you delete any bookmarks or folders and then close the Bookmarks file window, you cannot undo the changes you made. A very important thing to know about Netscape is that the Bookmarks file is saved automatically each time you close the Bookmarks file window.

4. Save your Bookmarks file to a flash drive or to your desktop.
If you create a bookmark file from home, you can bring it into school and use it on any computer with Netscape Navigator. You only need a flash drive. For this activity, if you do not have a flash drive, you can save the Bookmarks file to your computer’s desktop.

Tip Whenever you make a duplicate copy of your Bookmarks file, you should always save it with another name to avoid confusion. In fact, an excellent organizational technique is to save the duplicate file with your first name and the current date. This way, you can tell which is the most current version of your Bookmarks file, no matter where it has been saved.

With your Bookmarks file window open, go under File to export. When the Export Bookmarks window appears, rename your Bookmarks file with your first name and the date. For example, "james1.29.99." Make sure the Save location is either your floppy disk or your computer’s desktop and click Save. The Navigator icon looks like this when it is saved to the desktop:

5. Use your saved Bookmarks file.
If you have saved your Bookmarks file on a floppy disk and you would like to use it on a different computer that has Netscape Navigator, it is easy to do. Netscape doesn't have to be open --it will open automatically when you open your Bookmark file. Here's how: First, plug your flash drive into the computer. Find your saved Bookmarks file on the drive. Double click on its icon. Once you have double clicked on this icon, it will simultaneously launch Netscape and open your saved Bookmarks file. You can now use this as you use any web page! It will look similar to this:
