Service Description

Service Name: VoIP Phone
Service Name Synonyms: Voice over IP phone, VoIP phone, IP Telephone, Phone Service
Description: DoIT provides phone service to faculty and staff using VoIP technology.
Availability: 24/7/365, except planned maintenance windows.
Eligibility: VoIP phones are available for all faculty and staff in buildings that have been converted to VoIP from the legacy Centrex system. VoIP phones are not typically personalized for student workers, except where business needs justify personalization.
Restrictions:

VoIP phones are only available in buildings that have been converted from the Centrex system. VoIP phones are not presently available at remote campus locations.

 

VoIP phones must be connected directly to the campus network infrastructure to receive power. (VoIP Phones do not work through local hubs or switches.)

 

To maintain the integrity of 911 Location Data and ensure employee safety, employees must notify IT before moving any VoIP from one room to another.

Pre-Requisite Services: Active network data drop that has Power over Ethernet (POE). VoIP phones do not work behind a non-POE hub or switch.

Requisition and Approval Process:

To request that WEMU Radio on Hold be added to your phone, send an e-mail to PhoneHelp@emich.edu that includes "Please add Music on Hold to [insert MAC address]".  (The MAC address is a 12-digit hexadecimal number found on a bar code sticker on the underside of your phone labeled "MAC").

Costs and Limitations: Prices vary depending on cost from reseller. Current pricing is typically between $300 and $400. If a new data drop is required, the contracted rate is $325 per drop.
