Service Name: Google Apps for Education (GAE) 
Service Name Synonyms: EMU Google, GAE
Description:

DoIT offers email and collaboration software to EMU students, alumni, and faculty via Google Apps for Education.

 

GAE provides a variety of web-based application services including email, word processing, spreadsheets, calendaring, groups, and file storage/sharing.

Availability: 24/7/365, except during planned maintenance windows.
Eligibility:

All students presently eligible to register for courses are eligible for a Google Apps for Education account. They may keep this account even after graduation. There is no fixed removal date for these accounts.

 

Faculty members are also eligible to opt-in to GAE in place of or in addition to their Zimbra accounts for email.  All faculty members have access to the collaboration features of the service by logging in per the instructions in the "Service Login" section of this document.

 

Staff members are not eligible to migrate to GAE for email and calendaring. However, all staff have access to the other collaboration features of the GAE service by logging in per the instructions in the "Service Login" section of this document.

Restrictions:

GAE provides a total of 30 GB of storage shared between email and Google Drive file storage.

 

Email size is limited to 25 MB per message.

 

Firstname.lastname@emich.edu mail aliases are not available to students.

Support:

DoIT provides support for basic functionality of the Gmail web-client application. Additional support including settings for mobile devices, client programs, and other Google apps may be found here: http://learn.googleapps.com/

 

Support is available through the IT Help Desk at 734-487-2120 or it.helpdesk@emich.edu. Support is provided during the service hours of the IT Help Desk.

  • Gmail – web based e-mail service
  • Google Calendar – web based calendaring service
  • Google Drive – File storage and sharing
  • Google Contacts – Address book and personal mailing list.
  • Google groups – Discussion group system that allows organization into commonly accessible folders with optional collaborative inbox.
  • Firstname.lastname@emich.edu Mail Alias – Faculty only
  • Mobile Device Settings and Access – Service is compatible with common mobile devices.
  • Mail Client Settings – Settings support is provided by Google. 
Service Login: This service is accessed primarily by the address http://google.emich.edu but may be accessed by virtually any Google login page by specifying the full @emich.edu user name in the login form. Additionally, users who have GAE as their mail system can access it via the email button in http://my.emich.edu.

GAE accounts are provisioned to all new Eastern Michigan University students. Faculty may learn about the opt-in migration http://www.emich.edu/it/services/googleapps/

Faculty and staff may request Firstname.lastname@emich.edu mail aliases by contacting the IT Help Desk.

Costs and Limitations: None. Neither departments nor individuals are charged for normal usage.
