SSASECT - Creating a New Course Section

Use the Schedule form (SSASECT) to create new and edit/view existing sections. A section is used to describe an instance of when a course is offered, where it is offered, who the instructor is, and how many students can enroll.

Note: The Office of Records and Registration will roll sections from the previous year's respective term(s) and the Class Schedule Audit for Dept Schedulers report will be used to view the rolled sections. We recommend reviewing the Class Schedule Audit for Dept Schedulers report in BOE prior to creating any new sections.

Follow these directions to create a course section in SSASECT:

  1. From the Banner Main menu, type the form name in the Go To... box press the [Enter] key on the keyboard.

  2. The form is displayed.Type the term code in the Term field.

    Note: To search for a term code, click the Term field pull-down arrow. A list of term codes are displayed. Locate and double-click the code to return to the form and display it in the Term field. See Glossary of Banner Codes and Fields for more information about term codes.
  3. Click the Create CRN button.

    Note: To search for a CRN, click CRN field pull-down arrow and see SSASECQ - Searching for Course Sections for more information.

  4. The Course Section Information tab is displayed. Type the subject code in the Subject field.

    Note: To search for a subject code, 1) click the Subject field pull-down arrow and choose View Existing Courses from the list. 2) Type as much of the code as you know, along with the wildcard (%), in the Find field. 3) Click the Find button. A list of subject codes are displayed. Locate and double-click the code to return to the form and display it in the Subject field.
  5. If necessary, type the course number in the Course Number field.

    Note: The Title field is automatically populated based on the value in the Course Number field. See Glossary of Banner Codes and Fields for more information.

  6. Type the next available section number in the Section field. See Glossary of Banner Codes and Fields for more information.

    Note: If the next available section number is not known, click the Section field pull-down arrow to go to the Schedule Section Query form (SSASECQ) to search for the next available section number. The recommended search criteria is: Term, Subject, and Course. Look in the Section field to locate the next available section number. When you are finished, click the Exit button on the toolbar to return to the Schedule form (SSASECT). See  SSASECQ - Searching for Course Sections for more information.
  7. Type the campus code in the Campus field. See Glossary of Banner Codes and Fields for more information.

    Note: To search for a campus code, click the Campus field pull-down arrow. A list of campus codes are displayed. Double-click the code to return to the form and display the code in the Campus field.

  8. Type the status code in the Status field. See Glossary of Banner Codes and Fields for more information.

    Note: To search for a status code, click the Status field pull-down arrow. A list of status codes are displayed. Locate and double-click the code to return to form and display it in the Status field.
  9. Type the schedule type code in the Schedule Type field. See Glossary of Banner Codes and Fields  for more information.

    Note: To search for a schedule type code, click the Schedule Type field pull-down arrow. A list of schedule type codes are displayed. Locate and double-click the code to return to the form and display it in the Schedule Type field.

  10. Unless you are in the Honors department and are creating an honors section, leave the Grade Mode field blank. See Glossary of Banner Codes and Fields for more information.
  11. If this section requires department permissions, type DP in the Special Approval field; otherwise, leave this field blank. See Glossary of Banner Codes and Fields for more information.

    Note: To remove department permission, delete DP from the field and click the Save button on the toolbar.

  12. Type the part of term code in the Part of Term field. See Glossary of Banner Codes and Fields for more information.

    Note: To search for a part of term code, click the Part of Term field pull-down arrow. A list of codes are displayed. Locate and double-click the code to return to the form and display it in the Part of Term field.

  13. When necessary, uncheck the Print, Gradable, and Voice Response and Self-Service Available checkboxes. See Glossary of Banner Codes and Fields for more information.

  14. Optionally, edit the CEU Indicator, Credit Hours, Billing Hours, Contact Hours, Lecture, Lab and Other hours fields. See Glossary of Banner Codes and Fields for more information.

    Note: Optionally, navigate to the Link Ident field and type the two character Link Identifier code you want to work with. See  Linking Sections for more information.

  15. Click the Save button on the toolbar.

  16. When you are finished, click the Exit button on the toolbar to return to the Banner Main menu.
