Service Description

Service Name: VPN
Service Name Synonyms: Virtual Private Network, WebVPN, AnyConnect,
Description: DoIT provides VPN access to those Staff and Faculty members with a business need to use the service. This service enables individuals to connect to EMU's campus network through an encrypted tunnel from remote locations. This allows connected individuals to access systems and services that are "inside" the university's firewall.
Availability: 24/7/365, except for planned maintenance windows.
Eligibility: VPN access is granted to Staff and Faculty members with a business need, upon their request, for up to one year.
Restrictions:
  • VPN Access is limited to employees with a business need to use the system that have an active VPN access request on file.  Access requests must be renewed annually. Student access is only permitted on an exception basis and must be approved in writing by an appropriate supervisor or faculty member.
  • While using the VPN, a computer is a member of the EMU internal network and subject to all the security policies of an on-campus computer. Security policies are available for review at http://www.emich.edu/it/about/policies/IT_Policy_8.php.
  • EMU reserves the right to scan a computer while connected to the VPN if a connection in any way represents a threat to the security or function of the University.
  • The Division of Information Technology reserves the right to restrict VPN access to certain websites and web services in case of security or network load issues.
  • An on-campus computer cannot be controlled with VPN from a remote location. The VPN does not include remote control functionality like PC-Anywhere or GotoMyPC.

Requisition and Approval Process:

New VPN Access Requests:

  1. Using a computer connected to the WIRED network on the EMU main campus. Visit https://myit.emich.edu/index.php?view=ViewMyVPNRequest

  2. Login with your NetID and password, if prompted.

  3. Click the “Request VPN Access” link.

  4. In the "Why you need VPN Access" dialog, enter a one-sentence justification that accurately reflects your basic business need for access.

  5. Click “Submit Request.”

VPN Access registration must be renewed annually.  Each registered user will receive an email with instructions reminding them to renew their VPN access each year.  However, if you miss a renewal, just follow the instructions above to submit a new request.
