Has My Computer Been Hacked?

Here are some symptoms that may indicate that your computer may have been comprised:

• Files disappear or are modified unexpectedly
• Strange files appear or grow in size unexpectedly
• Hard disk space shrinks without reason
• The computer slows considerably or problems appear suddenly
• Strange messages or dialog boxes appear on the screen
• Programs stop working as expected or crash often
• The internet connection slows dramatically for an extended period
• The internet connection is in use, but you are not using it
• A phone call, letter, or email comes from your internet service provider or administrator noting strange activity coming from your machine
• Antispyware or virus detection tools alert you to a problem
• Someone else has logged into your computer without your permission
• Mouse movements and/or keyboard strokes occur seemingly on their own
