Has My Computer Been Hacked?
Here are some symptoms that may indicate that your computer may have been comprised:
- Files disappear or are modified unexpectedly
- Strange files appear or grow in size unexpectedly
- Hard disk space shrinks without reason
- The computer slows considerably or problems appear suddenly
- Strange messages or dialog boxes appear on the screen
- Programs stop working as expected or crash often
- The internet connection slows dramatically for an extended period
- The internet connection is in use, but you are not using it
- A phone call, letter, or email comes from your internet service provider or administrator noting strange activity coming from your machine
- Antispyware or virus detection tools alert you to a problem
- Someone else has logged into your computer without your permission
- Mouse movements and/or keyboard strokes occur seemingly on their own
