Student Education Records

Student education records are protected by the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974 (FERPA) which is federal legislation in the United States that protects the privacy of students' personally identifiable information (PII). The act applies to all educational institutions that receive federal funds.

Examples

The following are protected under FERPA:

  • Student’s schedule
  • Student’s grades
  • Student’s Grade Point Average (GPA)
  • Student’s number (EID number) or student photo
  • Student’s total number of credits completed or anticipated graduation date
  • Student’s social security number or date of birth
  • Student’s financial aid or billing information
