Eastern Michigan University EMU HOME

The aftermath of Hurricane Katrina has been felt by many. Almost everyone in the EMU family has felt the effects either through personal connections or economic consequences. This web site was established to help the EMU community respond to Katrina and provide information on how members of the EMU family can receive assistance. Most efforts are currently complete, but if additional opportunities arise, they will be posted here. For information, please contact Greg Peoples.

How You Can Help - ongoing information

Eastern facilitated a number of volunteer opportunities for students to become involved with the relief efforts in Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama; many in collaboration with VISION.

Please be aware that any students wishing to volunteer who will be absent from the University during a term in which they are enrolled must make individual arrangements with their professors. Contact the Office of the Ombudsman for more information and further assistance in this.

VISION worked with departments around campus to collect cell phones that were made available to victims of Katrina for emergency services. Click here for more information.

Project Backpack is now complete. Project Backpack was a grassroots effort by the College of Education to provide school age children in the Gulf region with school supplies. Visit the Project Backpack information site at www.emich.edu/katrinarelief/projectbackpack (archival; this project is now complete)

EMU worked with Washtenaw County ETCS (Employment Training Community Service Agency) in collecting durable goods. Click here for more information.

News & Information (archives)

EMU

Eastern Michigan University is collecting used cell phones for distribution to elderly victims of Hurricane Katrina via the charity Phones for Life. Phones for Life is a nonprofit organization that collects used cell phones, chargers and batteries for redistribution to the elderly for emergency purposes. All cell phones are programmed to have 911 capabilities and do not need a service provider to access 911. Collection boxes are at McKenny Union, Halle Library, Dining Commons ONE and the Rec/IM. These phones will go to the elderly who have been affected by Hurricane Katrina. Please share this information, donate a used cell phone, and encourage others to transfer their used technology (an old cell phone) and make it a live and vital technology connection for the elderly. One call may save a life; one donated phone enhances a life. For more information, call Bob Teehan, 487-8659, or VISION, 487-3045. posted Sept. 2
