Rainbow Hang Outs
2nd Monday (March 8th) & 4th Thursday (March 25th) of Every Month @ 4PM
Your LGBT Resource Center's Queer Student Lounge - 234A King Hall
Looking for a place to just hang out and meet fellow lesbians, gays, bisexuals, allies and transgendered folk of all ethnicities, nationalaties, religions and anything else you can think of? We'll even provide ya with some snacks. So bring along some friends (the more the merrier!) and meet with students like you from all over Eastern.

There will not be a Rainbow Hang Out on February 26th as previously advertised due to the break...sorry about that!

We're here...we're queer...get over it! Your LGBTRC is planning what we'll be doing this year to let people know that LGBT folk are on campus and that we're nice people too. Day of Silence
April 21st
This is a student-led day of action where those who support making anti-LGBT bias unacceptable in schools take a day-long vow of silence to recognize and protest the discrimination and harassment - in effect, the silencing - experienced by LGBT students and their allies. In 2003, over 200,000 students in nearly 2,000 K - 12 schools and 400 colleges and universities participated in the Day of Silence. More information coming soon. Interested in helping plan this event? Please visit the volunteering web page.
Lavender Graduation
April - Dates To Be Announced
Sadly there are some LGBTA folks on campus who are leaving us. Granted they're moving on to bigger and better things, but still, we're sad to see them go. Join us as we recognize their achievements on campus and send them off in true LGBT style. We'll also be announcing this year's Role Models & Mentors recipients. Nomination forms and more information will be available soon...
Together in Faith
May 22nd
Many faith communities across the country are still struggling with how to deal with Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) issues, whether to allow membership, ordain, and bless unions, or whether to oppose equal rights, respect and recognition for LGBT people. One side of the issue will gather in Ypsilanti, MI, in May 2004 for "Together in Faith: Journey to Inclusiveness" a national multiracial, multigenerational conference to train people of all religions and spiritualities to create LGBT-affirming communities.

Together in Faith will bring together LGBT and Ally people of all ages, races, religions and spiritualities from around the country for skill-enhancing workshops led by nationally renowned activists. Presenters at the conference will include: former ghostwriter for Billy Graham, Jerry Falwell and Pat Robertson, and author of "Stranger at the Gate: To be Gay and Christian in America, Rev. Dr. Mel White of Soulforce, Inc.; Raven Kaldera, Female to Male, shaman, a neo-pagan minister, an organic farmer and homesteader; Dr. Sylvia Rhue, Director of Equal Partners in Faith and co-producer of the documentary film about LGBT issues in communities of color, "All God,s Children; the founder of Al-Fatiha, an organization for LGBT Muslims, Faisal Alam; Macha NightMare, Priestess, Witch, and Elder in The Covenant of the Goddess; Kay Whitlock with the American Friends Service Committee and Acharya Swami Durga Das, student of Ma Jaya Sati Bhagavati for thirty years and a Senior Acharya of the Dattatreya Kali Saraswati Order of Monks and Sanyassin, among others.

Interested in attending? Or better yet, interested in volunteering? Contact Amanda Sharri, American Friends Service Committee Conference Coordinator,
via email or at 734.260.0517. You can also contact Casey Frazee, from the American Friends Service Committee, via email or at 734.904.5757. Be sure to mention that Your LGBT Resource Center sent you.

Marriage Amendment Going to Vote 3/9 - Act NOW!
We believe the Michigan House of Representatives will vote on House Joint Resolution U (The marriage amendment) at 1:00 PM, Tuesday March 9 at the State Capitol.

It is expected that there will be an alternate resolution offered that does not ban domestic partner benefits and civil unions, but still puts the issue of banning marriages for gays and lesbians on the ballot. This is less horrible, but still really horrible.

The following news article also indicates the Christian Coalition has moved a full-time lobbyist in to work against us until the vote on Tuesday and possibly beyond.

So save the date for the marriage vote in the House. The Senate could vote as early as the next day or the day.

IF YOU HAVE NOT CONTACTED YOUR REPRESENTATIVE, IT IS ESSENTIAL THAT YOU DO IT NOW.

Click here for the full text of the resolution.

News Article Resources Now Available
A benefit that Your LGBT Resource Center is offered is receiving via email a large number of LGBT related news articles every day. We have decided the best thing to do with these articles is make them available to you. So we hauled a file cabinet into the Queer Student Lounge and have begun categorizing the articles and making them available in this file cabinet. We're also working on acquiring a number of magazine subscriptions which will be archived and also made available in this file cabinet. We like to think of it as our file cabinet of LGBT information. So now, in addition to having a large number of books and videos available for students, faculty and staff to use, we now have a collection of news articles which will be expanding daily.

Here are just some of the topics covered by these articles:
~ Discrimination
~ Hate Crimes
~ Health Issues
~ HIV/AIDS
~ LGBT & Religion
~ LGBT Media
~ Political Elections
~ Same Sex Marriage

Peep Show Collective - Women's Group
Greetings!

We are Veronica and Violet, of the Peep Show Collective, a new local group we are forming for women of all sexualities. We exist to open up a sex positive *(see definition below) discussion of women's sexuality with the hope that dialogue can facilitate in the understanding and acceptance of diverse forms of human sexuality. We hope to dispel cultural myths surrounding women's sexuality by creating a safe, healthy space for women to talk about sex and sexuality.

And to get going, we need to know what women want to know about sex. What information is lacking out there? What turns you on? What turns you off? Where is the kink in the greater A2/Detroit area? What sex centered classes/discussions/resources have you always wished existed in your community?

And if women have a specific sex related questions, we are currently accepting questions for the sex-advice column in our publication soon to be appearing around town...

So send us your questions! Send us your thoughts! Send us an email.

And tell your friends to do the same!

Thanks Everyone,
Veronica & Violet

*Sex-positive refers to the rejection of the dominant view of sex as something shameful and instead embraces all consensual sex practices between one, two, or more adults as healthy and without needing apology or justification. Sex-positive sexuality celebrates the enjoyment of sex and sexuality however-and with whomever-one chooses. It includes looking at diverse sexual practices, emphasizes sexual health and pleasure, and being positive and unapologetic about any consensual sexual practices in which adults engage

Male Couples Needed for Study about Relationships
I am a researcher and doctoral student at the University of Denver, also teaching at George Washington University. I am looking for men in committed gay male couples to participate in my dissertation research about relationship quality, love, intimacy, communication, and sexual behavior in men in long-term, committed relationships.

You qualify for “The Male Couples Relationships Study” if
- You and your partner have been together one year or longer

The questionnaire may be completed by email attachment, online, or we can mail you a hard copy questionnaire with return postage paid. Once you have returned the questionnaire, each member of the couple will be paid $20 for their participation. You will also receive a synopsis of the study results when completed.

Leadership Experience of LGBT Students Study
Attention Lesbian, Bi, Gay, Trans, Queer, Same Gender Loving, and/or Questioning Students

My name is Kris Renn. I am a faculty member at Michigan State University, in a program that provides education to graduate students seeking careers in the field of college student affairs administration. I am also a former dean of student life at Brown University, where my job included providing programs and services to LGBT students. With my colleague Brent Bilodeau - coordinator of LGBT resources at MSU and a doctoral student in my department
- and three other graduate students I am conducting a study of the leadership experiences of LGBT college students. We have begun work at MSU, are expanding to other institutions in the state of Michigan, and are very interested in involving students from Eastern.

The study involves one one-hour interview a semester with a member of our research team. Students who have already been interviewed report that the interviews are interesting and even fun, providing an opportunity to talk about LGBT identity and leadership experiences in and out of LGBT communities. Interviews are always scheduled at times and in places most convenient for the student, so your participation would not require travel or schedule re-arrangement.

If you would be willing to participate in the project - or would like more information before making a decision - please email or call 517-353-5979.

LGBT Student / Youth Travel Survey 2004
The world is opening up, and offers new and fantastic travel opportunities for us every year. Who knew? Gay marriage in Holland. Then Belgium. And now, Canada! It's even cool to have sex in Texas. Amazing.

In our rapidly changing world, every year Community Marketing runs a survey to get a "pulse" on where we are going, where we stay, what we like to do on vacation, etc.  We are then better able to advise government tourism boards, visitors bureaus, airlines, cruise lines, etc. to help them better serve our community.

To assist this effort, we'd like to ask you to take our 8 minute survey. It is actually fun to do, and is educational in the process. You might learn something about your travel motivations and preferences--

PLUS new this year, you can VOTE for our "Community Choice Awards." Pick your favorite LGBT travel destination, plus your favorite airline, gay hotel, mainstream hotel, rental car company and cruise line.  And tell us why it is your favorite too.

Please use this link to start the survey. You might even win the free airline tickets!

All personal information is held confidentially by Community Marketing, Inc. and will not be sold.

Thanks, and bon voyage!

Online Research - Effects of disclosure on personal expression of lesbian women
Hello, my name is Sarah Shafer. I am a senior psychology major at The College of Wooster in Ohio. I am conducting a web-based study for my senior research project on the effects of disclosure on personal expression of lesbian women. Because there has been very limited research on the components of lesbianism and the effects that disclosure of sexual orientation has on the extent to which a lesbian woman expresses her feelings, thoughts and opinions, I encourage you to participate in my study by completing a questionnaire. The questionnaire should take no more than 15 minutes to complete. This questionnaire is completely confidential and as a participant, you will remain anonymous. Further information on the nature of this study is provided on the site of the questionnaire. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me via email. Any e-mail correspondence will remain confidential. Thank you very much for your time and cooperation.

Researchers at The University of Memphis are asking lesbian, bisexual, women-loving-women, or transgendered women who are or have been in a same-sex relationship to complete two surveys that will generate an appreciation of the complexity of same-sex relationships and gender expression. This research team is LGBT-positive and interested in furthering an understanding of the representative experiences of women's diversity in sexual and gender orientation.

Please use this link to start the survey.

This study was reviewed and approved by the Institutional Review Board at The University of Memphis (#EO3-250, phone 901 678-2533). Responses are encrypted and stored on a secure server; answers are anonymous and no identifying information is asked.

On the conference day, May 22, we will need volunteers throughout the day for registration, media support, set up, tear down, etc. If you volunteer for 5 hours on the conference day you can attend the conference for FREE!

DNC's Pride at the Polls Program
Democratic National Committee Office of GLBT Outreach
We are asking you to join us in an important effort designed to increase the visibility and political power of the gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender (GLBT) community.

The 2000 presidential election was decided by less than 600 votes.  The GLBT community cast more than 4.2 million votes in 2000.  We can and must make the difference in the 2004 presidential election. The Democratic National Committee's (DNC) Office of GLBT Outreach and the GLBT Caucus of the College Democrats of America (CDA) are proud to announce the Pride at the Polls Program-- an innovative effort designed to educate and register thousands of GLBT voters.GLBT Pride festivals, which attract hundreds of thousands of GLBT-receptive voters each year, have proved to be one of the most effective venues to reach GLBT voters. How will it work? Volunteers from all across the country will sign up to be "Table Captains." Joined by DNC and CDA volunteers, table captains will (1) distribute DNC pamphlets on GLBT issues, (2) register thousands of GLBT voters, and (3) help increase the political power of our community. All materials for your table will be available on the DNC GLBT website. Why Should You Volunteer for the Pride at the Polls Program?
•  Because we can still be fired in most states for coming out of the closet or for putting a picture of our partners on our desks at work.
•  Because we are all still the victims of hate crimes and there is still no federal law to help local law enforcement officials prosecute those who attack our community.
•  Because the rate of HIV infection is rising quickly among GLBT communities of color.
•  Because schools are still not safe for our GLBT youth.
•  Because so many of us still do not have access to domestic partnership benefits.
•  Because many of us still cannot visit our partners in the hospital when they are sick.
•  Because your political involvement in our community makes us proud; we are only powerful if people know we exist.

Join us as we continue the march to take back our nation in the name of basic fairness and equality for all Americans. Together, we can take back the White House!

Same Gender Marriage in San Francisco
On February 12, 2004, the county clerk in San Francisco began issuing marriage licenses to same-sex couples, pursuant to a directive from Mayor Gavin Newsom. While this is now an option, it is important for couples to understand that getting married in San Francisco will not necessarily guarantee you and your partner the rights and privileges of different-sex married couples and may have significant tax and other legal implications.
