Visibility Week
March 21st ~ 27th
We're here...we're queer...get over it! Your LGBTRC is planning what we'll be doing this year to let people know that LGBT folk are on campus and that we're nice people too. This year's events will take a slightly different approach as we focus on educating people on why they should care about the LGBT community around them.

Scheduled Events:
~ Thursday - Rainbow Hang Out - 4PM - Your LGBTRC
~ Thursday - Visibility Week Party -
Village Multipurpose Room - 7PM

We're looking for volunteers to help plan and execute this year's event! Interested? Please visit the volunteering web page and contact us! Be sure to let us know that you're interested in Visibility Week.

Rainbow Hang Outs
2nd Monday (April 13th) & 4th Thursday (March 25th) of Every Month @ 4PM
Your LGBT Resource Center's Queer Student Lounge - 234A King Hall
Looking for a place to just hang out and meet fellow lesbians, gays, bisexuals, allies and transgendered folk of all ethnicities, nationalities, religions and anything else you can think of? Well here it is! Based on requests from students like you, we're designating time every month in Your LGBT Resource Center Queer Student Lounge to just meet and hang out with fellow students. We'll even provide ya with some snacks. So bring along some friends (the more the merrier!) and meet with students like you from all over Eastern.

The Yellow Boat
March 26, 27 and April 1, 2, 3 @ 8 p.m.
March 27, 28 and April 3 @ 2 p.m.
Sponberg Theatre
Winner of the AATE Distinguished Play Award, this warm and exuberant play is based on the true story of 8 year-old Benjamin Saar. Bravely facing an uncertain future, Benjamin shapes the world around him using the colors he sees and feels as he battles first hemophilia and then AIDS. Experience the shimmering spectrum of his imagination and as he triumphantly sails his yellow boat all the way up to the sun. Appropriate for family audiences ages 8 and up.

Click here for more information about The Yellow Boat and why it is being done here at EMU.

If you are interested in attending a matinee at noon on Friday, April 2nd please contact Your LGBTRC by Friday, March 26th.  There will be a response session after the show with David Saar, the playwright, and an additional seminar 3:30- 5:00 that afternoon on his experiences working in the Arts.

Lavender Graduation
April 12th - Noon ~ 1:30PM
Alumni Room - McKenny Union
Sadly there are some LGBTA folks on campus who are leaving us. Granted they're moving on to bigger and better things, but still, we're sad to see them go. Join us as we recognize their achievements on campus and send them off in true LGBT style. We'll also be announcing this year's Role Models & Mentors recipients.

Click here to nominate an individual as a Role Model & Mentor.

Event is limited to 70 people. Please RSVP if you plan on attending.

Day of Silence
April 21st
This is a student-led day of action where those who support making anti-LGBT bias unacceptable in schools take a day-long vow of silence to recognize and protest the discrimination and harassment - in effect, the silencing - experienced by LGBT students and their allies. In 2003, over 200,000 students in nearly 2,000 K - 12 schools and 400 colleges and universities participated in the Day of Silence. More information coming soon. Interested in helping plan this event? Please visit the volunteering web page.
Together in Faith
May 22nd
Many faith communities across the country are still struggling with how to deal with Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) issues, whether to allow membership, ordain, and bless unions, or whether to oppose equal rights, respect and recognition for LGBT people. One side of the issue will gather in Ypsilanti, MI, in May 2004 for "Together in Faith: Journey to Inclusiveness" a national multiracial, multigenerational conference to train people of all religions and spiritualities to create LGBT-affirming communities.

Together in Faith will bring together LGBT and Ally people of all ages, races, religions and spiritualities from around the country for skill-enhancing workshops led by nationally renowned activists. Presenters at the conference will include: former ghostwriter for Billy Graham, Jerry Falwell and Pat Robertson, and author of "Stranger at the Gate: To be Gay and Christian in America, Rev. Dr. Mel White of Soulforce, Inc.; Raven Kaldera, Female to Male, shaman, a neo-pagan minister, an organic farmer and homesteader; Dr. Sylvia Rhue, Director of Equal Partners in Faith and co-producer of the documentary film about LGBT issues in communities of color, "All God,s Children; the founder of Al-Fatiha, an organization for LGBT Muslims, Faisal Alam; Macha NightMare, Priestess, Witch, and Elder in The Covenant of the Goddess; Kay Whitlock with the American Friends Service Committee and Acharya Swami Durga Das, student of Ma Jaya Sati Bhagavati for thirty years and a Senior Acharya of the Dattatreya Kali Saraswati Order of Monks and Sanyassin, among others.

Interested in attending? Or better yet, interested in volunteering? Contact Amanda Sharri, American Friends Service Committee Conference Coordinator,
via email or at 734.260.0517. You can also contact Casey Frazee, from the American Friends Service Committee, via email or at 734.904.5757. Be sure to mention that Your LGBT Resource Center sent you.

Protect Sex Education Programs
This is likely to go for a vote on the senate floor (SB943/944) and for a vote on the house floor (HB5477/5478) today (3/25). It is critical that legislators hear from their constituents. This is an attempt to dismantle sex education as we know it. Three calls to make:

Call, or e-mail your representative

Contact list of representatives: http://house.michigan.gov/replist

Call, or e-mail your Senator

Contact list of senators: http://senate.michigan.gov/SenatorInfo/alphabetical_list_of_senators2003.htm

Call the Governor's office Constituent Services @ 517-335-7858

Urge them to vote 'no' on Senate Bills 943 and 944, which amend the current laws regarding sex education in schools.

The legislation excludes gay and lesbian students by requiring schools districts to teach that abstinence from sexual intercourse is the expected behavioral norm for unmarried people , to teach honor and respect for marriage , stress that pupils should abstain from sexual intercourse until marriage , and include a discussion of consequences of adolescent sexual activity outside of marriage .

More on this issue:
~ Our model local advisory boards composed of parents, pupils in the district's schools, educators, local clergy, and community health professionals would be chaired by a parent and a majority of members must be parents.
~ School Boards rather than school districts establish the advisory boards and determine membership.
~ All materials and instruction on HIV/AIDS and sex education must teach abstinence until marriage from sexual intercourse.
~ Instruction must also meet thirteen additional unfunded requirements related to abstinence, marriage, possible consequences of sexual activity outside of marriage, sexual harassment and exploitation, parental responsibility and marriage, and adoption.

The legislation also requires the Department of Education to investigate a complaint from anyone who believes that requirements regarding HIV/AIDS and sex education instruction are not being met. The complaint goes directly to the State Superintendent, not the local boards.

Current law already states that abstinence must be taught as a responsible method for preventing unwanted pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases. A majority of districts have currently adopted an abstinence-based curriculum, which emphasizes abstinence but also teaches students about methods of risk reduction (condoms and birth control).

This legislation takes away the control of the local school district to decide what curriculum best meets the needs of students and meets the standards within the community.

Urge your Senator as well as the Governor's office to vote 'no' on Senate Bills 943 and 944, which amend the current laws regarding sex education in schools.

TuneIn TurnOut - TurnOut Detroit
FACT: A person can legally be fired in Michigan for being gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgender.
For lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) people, America is 14 states that recognize the right to live free from job discrimination and 36 states that don't . This is one of the realities that drove the Gill Foundation, in collaboration with the Affirmations Lesbian and Gay Community Center, Detroit Black Gay Pride, Inc. and Triangle Foundation, to launch
TurnOut Detroit. The campaign's goal is simple: to empower the LGBT community and their friends and family, to increase activism and voter turnout in the 2004 general election.

Our country is at a crucial point on the road to advancing the rights of LGBT people, evident by the fact that gay marriage could emerge as the defining cultural issue of the 2004 election.

Over the past few months, LGBT issues have rapidly moved to the forefront of mainstream America; water coolers, dinner tables and television sets are buzzing. Extensive media coverage continues to spark heated debate and dialogue from San Francisco to Oregon to Boston, but this is only the beginning. With your help,
TurnOut Detroit can move debate into action, creating positive, lasting change.

Your support of TurnOut Detroit is crucial to the campaign's success. Go to
www.TurnOut.org for the latest news, events and resources you need to educate yourself, friends and family on the issues that affect LGBT people.

Thank You!
A MAJOR Thank You to all the Students, Faculty and Staff that were a part of the Project YES Conference!

News Article Resources Now Available
A benefit that Your LGBT Resource Center is offered is receiving via email a large number of LGBT related news articles every day. We have decided the best thing to do with these articles is make them available to you. So we hauled a file cabinet into the Queer Student Lounge and have begun categorizing the articles and making them available in this file cabinet. We're also working on acquiring a number of magazine subscriptions which will be archived and also made available in this file cabinet. We like to think of it as our file cabinet of LGBT information. So now, in addition to having a large number of books and videos available for students, faculty and staff to use, we now have a collection of news articles which will be expanding daily.

Here are just some of the topics covered by these articles:
~ Discrimination
~ Hate Crimes
~ Health Issues
~ HIV/AIDS
~ LGBT & Religion
~ LGBT Media
~ Political Elections
~ Same Sex Marriage

Greetings!

We are Veronica and Violet, of the Peep Show Collective, a new local group we are forming for women of all sexualities. We hope to dispel cultural myths surrounding women's sexuality by creating a safe, healthy space for women to talk about sex and sexuality.

And to get going, we need to know what women want to know about sex. What information is lacking out there? What turns you on? What turns you off? Where is the kink in the greater A2/Detroit area? What sex centered classes/discussions/resources have you always wished existed in your community?

And if women have a specific sex related questions, we are currently accepting questions for the sex-advice column in our publication soon to be appearing around town...

So send us your questions! Send us your thoughts! Or if you would like more information about meetings, send us an email.

And tell your friends to do the same!

Recent Work by Shaqe' Kalaj and Jean Wilson

Shaqe' Kalaj {pronounced "shacha Kali"} is a Detroit area artist who works primarily in acrylic, woodcut prints, etchings, ink, photography and mixed media. The figurative faces and forms that emerge from this work opens doors to new perceptions of identity, gender, and existence. She shows her work regularly in Michigan and in 2003 had work accepted for shows at galleries in New York, Texas, Toronto, San Francisco, and other cities across North America. She recently co-published a book called "The Unborn Muse of Shadows".

Jean Wilson is a found object sculptor/poet. She considers herself as a spy on contemporary culture and also as a spy on herself, watching the process evolve and discovering herself as she works. She considers the installation she is currently working on is the first time that she will use any objects bought from the store; but the purpose was for another reason. It includes emergency blankets that were purchased for homeless people and after the exhibit is dismantled they will be given to those in need. Jean can be classified under the titles of Purist, Found Object Artist, Activist Artist, Fluxis, Mixed Media Artist, Post Dada, Constructionist, Installationist, Deconstructional Constructionist, Jean has been showing her activist work since 1995 in various venues throughout the Metro Detroit area.
