We're here...we're queer...get over it! Your LGBTRC is planning what we'll be doing this year to let people know that LGBT folk are on campus and that we're nice people too. This year's events will take a slightly different approach as we focus on educating people on why they should care about the LGBT community around them.

We're looking for volunteers to help plan and execute this year's event! Interested? Please visit the volunteering web page and contact us! Be sure to let us know that you're interested in Visibility Week.

Day of Silence
April 21st
This is a student-led day of action where those who support making anti-LGBT bias unacceptable in schools take a day-long vow of silence to recognize and protest the discrimination and harassment - in effect, the silencing - experienced by LGBT students and their allies. In 2003, over 200,000 students in nearly 2,000 K - 12 schools and 400 colleges and universities participated in the Day of Silence. More information coming soon. Interested in helping plan this event? Please visit the volunteering web page.

Clergy & People of Faith Needed for Press Conference on Marriage Ban Amendment
Wednesday, February 4th @ 9:30
Room 428 of the Capitol Building, Lansing

Michigan clergy and people of faith from The Religious Coalition for a Fair Michigan will descend on the State Capitol this Wednesday, February 4, 2004, at 10a.m. to urge legislators to vote against House Joint Resolution U and Senate Joint Resolution E, the so-called "marriage" amendment.

"Instead of amending our State Constitution to expand civil rights for Michigan citizens, this legislation writes discrimination into law," explains Michael Gibson-Faith of Quaker-based organization, The American Friends Service Committee, which is co-organizing Wednesday's events. "As spiritual people, clergy, and community leaders, we are committed to working for justice and equality for all Michigan citizens, and strongly oppose consideration of any legislation that would limit the rights and benefits of same-sex couples and families."

Gibson-Faith admits that the group of spiritual leaders calling itself The Religious Coalition for a Fair Michigan is diverse in its understanding of homosexuality as a moral issue, but are all one in affirming the full rights of all Michigan citizens and families to equal legal protections that secure and strengthen the family.

Wednesday's events will begin with a press conference in room 428 of the Capitol building in which Coalition members representing Michigan churches and spiritual organizations will explain to the press why Michigan must defeat this cruel, anti-family legislation. After the press conference, Coalition members will fan out to lobby legislators to vote against the proposed Constitutional amendment.

The Religious Coalition for a Fair Michigan represents over 100 Michigan clergy and faith communities. The group includes several Bishops and large churches, as well as many Quakers, Unitarians, and other spiritual communities. While not all members are able to attend Wednesday's events, the group believes that, if passed, the proposed Constitutional amendment would only serve to heighten an already hostile climate of discrimination and violence against gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender couples and families in Michigan.

Everyone who can should come regardless of whether you want to speak so that we can have a visible presence and a powerful lobbying impact.

For more information contact Michael Gibson-Faith via email or call 734-761-8283.

Peep Show Collective - Women's Group
Greetings!

We are Veronica and Violet, of the Peep Show Collective, a new local group we are forming for women of all sexualities. We exist to open up a sex positive *(see definition below) discussion of women's sexuality with the hope that dialogue can facilitate in the understanding and acceptance of diverse forms of human sexuality. We hope to dispel cultural myths surrounding women's sexuality by creating a safe, healthy space for women to talk about sex and sexuality.

And to get going, we need to know what women want to know about sex. What information is lacking out there? What turns you on? What turns you off? Where is the kink in the greater A2/Detroit area? What sex centered classes/discussions/resources have you always wished existed in your community?

And if women have a specific sex related questions, we are currently accepting questions for the sex-advice column in our publication soon to be appearing around town...

So send us your questions! Send us your thoughts! Send us an email.

And tell your friends to do the same!

Thanks Everyone,
Veronica & Violet

Translating Identity Conference
Saturday, February 28th
University of Vermont

Translating Identity is a FREE conference focusing on gender and gender identities. Open to the public, this event hopes to reach out the University of Vermont, the Burlington community, and the nation as a whole to educate us all further about transgender issues. With multiple panels to choose from at any time, some panels will be directed towards trans people and others will be for those who are fairly unfamiliar with the transgender movement and the topic of gender identity. This conference seeks to translate gender identity to both the queer community and its allies.

This year our keynote speaker is Dean Spade, a transgender activist and attorney who received his J.D. from UCLA School of Law in May 2001. His own experiences of poverty, struggle with public benefits systems, and with gender identity discrimination inspired him to start The Sylvia Rivera Law Project, a project committed to sexual and gender self-determination for all people.

This conference is FREE and includes breakfast and lunch. To reserve your spot, register today on our web site.

LGBT Asian Pacific Conference
Friday, March 5th ~ Sunday, March 7th
New York University - New York City

Queer Asian Pacific Legacy is a regional conference of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender pan-Asian Pacific Americans to network, organize, agitate, educate, and build capacity.

An unprecedented coalition of groups are planning an ambitious and first-ever multigender and pan-Asian conference that will bring together South Asians, East Asians, Southeast Asians and other APAs; as well as women, transgender, and young people - groups who have been traditionally underrepresented. 250 conference participants are envisioned. The last conference on the East Coast was held ten years ago.

There will be workshops, panels, speakers, social activities and caucuses. We hope the conference will be a catalyst for LGBT APAs to collaborate, build a political agenda, and ultimately advance social change. We also hope to develop the infrastructure of LGBT APA organizations and increase awareness on current issues confronting our unique and often overlooked community. The conference is fee of charge.

The Q*News is looking for love letters to be printed in our Radical Love issue which will be distributed at the MBLGTACC. Write one today for that special someone from last year who you'll see at the conference, your current special someone, or as a declaration that you finally figured out how to love yourself! It's kind of like a tatoo but not nearly as painful or permanent!

These don't have to be fancy or long and can range from serious ("To my soulmate Erin, thanks for a wonderful 5 years (and counting!)") to friendly ("To my roommate Jay, thanks for being there for me longer than any man I've dated") to sarcastic ("Dear Midwest area lesbian and bisexual women, thanks for nothing").

If you are interested in sending one in, we will be accepting them until Thursday at the latest. Get yours in today by sending it to qnews@msu.edu.

Leadership Experience of LGBT Students Study
Attention Lesbian, Bi, Gay, Trans, Queer, Same Gender Loving, and/or Questioning Students

My name is Kris Renn. I am a faculty member at Michigan State University, in a program that provides education to graduate students seeking careers in the field of college student affairs administration. I am also a former dean of student life at Brown University, where my job included providing programs and services to LGBT students. With my colleague Brent Bilodeau - coordinator of LGBT resources at MSU and a doctoral student in my department
- and three other graduate students I am conducting a study of the leadership experiences of LGBT college students. We have begun work at MSU, are expanding to other institutions in the state of Michigan, and are very interested in involving students from Eastern.

The study involves one one-hour interview a semester with a member of our research team. Students who have already been interviewed report that the interviews are interesting and even fun, providing an opportunity to talk about LGBT identity and leadership experiences in and out of LGBT communities. Interviews are always scheduled at times and in places most convenient for the student, so your participation would not require travel or schedule re-arrangement.

If you would be willing to participate in the project - or would like more information before making a decision - please email or call 517-353-5979.

Sexual Health, Education and Rights Articles Sought

Researchers, faculty, graduate students, and community based advocates are encouraged to submit brief proposals (100-200 words) for articles concerning sexual health, sexuality education, and sexual rights in the U.S. Publishing in American Sexuality is a unique opportunity to disseminate your research and expertise in a widely read, internationally accessible medium aimed at informing academics, community based advocates and the general public about the critical gaps in sexuality research and policy.

The published article will be 1000 words and written in a style that is accessible to non-academic audiences.

Please visit American Sexuality magazine and the NSRC web site
Please contact Cymene Howe, Ph.D., Managing Editor
via email or 415-437-1472 with questions and proposals for articles.

Hi, My name is Randy C. Miller, and I am a Freshmen at Edgewood College in Madison, Wisconsin. I am in the process of writing a book about LGBTQ life on college campuses across the nation. I am looking for any LGBTQ students to summit essays for my book, on how they have dealt with being LGBTQ and how it has affected them being on college campuses. The essays will be reviewed and then decided upon for entry into the book. If you don't mind I would keep those essays that didn't make it for the chance of entry into another book. Gay Men Needed for Study about Male Relationships
I am a researcher and doctoral student at the University of Denver, also teaching at George Washington University. I am looking for gay men to participate in a brief survey I am conducting about how men in relationships with other men communicate about sexuality. “Men in Relationships” is examining individual men who have had or are currently in a serious relationship.

If you are 18 to 65 years of age, are currently in a serious relationship, or have recently been in a serious relationship, you may qualify. If you agree to participate, you will be asked to complete a brief questionnaire about your romantic relationships and sexual activities. The questionnaire is downloadable from our website and may be returned via email. Or we can mail you a hard copy questionnaire.

Confidentiality is extremely important to me in my research. All participants’ responses will be kept confidential. LGBT Student / Youth Travel Survey 2004
The world is opening up, and offers new and fantastic travel opportunities for us every year. Who knew? Gay marriage in Holland. Then Belgium. And now, Canada! It's even cool to have sex in Texas. Amazing.

In our rapidly changing world, every year Community Marketing runs a survey to get a "pulse" on where we are going, where we stay, what we like to do on vacation, etc.  We are then better able to advise government tourism boards, visitors bureaus, airlines, cruise lines, etc. to help them better serve our community.

To assist this effort, we'd like to ask you to take our 8 minute survey. It is actually fun to do, and is educational in the process. You might learn something about your travel motivations and preferences--

PLUS new this year, you can VOTE for our "Community Choice Awards." Pick your favorite LGBT travel destination, plus your favorite airline, gay hotel, mainstream hotel, rental car company and cruise line.  And tell us why it is your favorite too.

Please use this link to start the survey. You might even win the free airline tickets!

All personal information is held confidentially by Community Marketing, Inc. and will not be sold.

Thanks, and bon voyage!

Online Research - Effects of disclosure on personal expression of lesbian women
Hello, my name is Sarah Shafer. I am a senior psychology major at The College of Wooster in Ohio. I am conducting a web-based study for my senior research project on the effects of disclosure on personal expression of lesbian women. Because there has been very limited research on the components of lesbianism and the effects that disclosure of sexual orientation has on the extent to which a lesbian woman expresses her feelings, thoughts and opinions, I encourage you to participate in my study by completing a questionnaire. The questionnaire should take no more than 15 minutes to complete. This questionnaire is completely confidential and as a participant, you will remain anonymous. Further information on the nature of this study is provided on the site of the questionnaire. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me via email. Any e-mail correspondence will remain confidential.. Thank you very much for your time and cooperation.

Research to build a greater understanding of gender and sexual orientation
Participate in research to build a greater understanding of gender and sexual orientation!

Researchers at The University of Memphis are asking lesbian, bisexual, women-loving-women, or transgendered women who are or have been in a same-sex relationship to complete two surveys that will generate an appreciation of the complexity of same-sex relationships and gender expression. This research team is LGBT-positive and interested in furthering an understanding of the representative experiences of women's diversity in sexual and gender orientation.

Please use this link to start the survey.

This study was reviewed and approved by the Institutional Review Board at The University of Memphis (#EO3-250, phone 901 678-2533). Responses are encrypted and stored on a secure server; answers are anonymous and no identifying information is asked.
