What are Archives?
In the course of daily life, the University administrators, faculty, staff, students, and alumni create and keep information about their personal and business activities. Archivists identify and preserve portions of this recorded information that have a lasting historical value.
These records—and the places they are kept—are called “archives.” Archives provide firsthand information about the past. They are valuable to researchers, scholars, students and others who have a serious interest in, and specific use for, its collections.
Archives records take many forms, including:
- University records of permanent historical value regardless of format. These include minutes, correspondence, reports, and publications produced by administrative, academic, and research units in the course of University business.
- Graduate and undergraduate catalogs, bulletins, programs, reports, floor plans and blueprints, special publications, photographs, and sound recordings.
- Biographies, papers and publications of faculty and administrators.
- Published and unpublished materials that document all aspects of the EMU community, including events, buildings and the physical campus, student life, both academic and extracurricular, lectureships, music, and sports.
- Records of faculty, staff, alumni/alumnae, and student organizations.
- Copies of PhD, EdD dissertations, masters theses, and undergraduate honors theses.
