Reciprocal Borrowing between EMU and UM

UM and EMU library logos

University of Michigan and Eastern Michigan University students, faculty and staff are eligible for guest borrowing privileges at the other institution. To qualify, you must be a currently enrolled student or current faculty or staff member in good standing at your own library. Form: U-M Library Card Request Form for EMU students and staff.

While visiting any of these participating libraries, you are encouraged to access electronic resources, make use of special collections and archives, and enjoy the many study spaces.

Registration

Faculty (including lecturers) have reciprocal borrowing privileges without registering; simply show your faculty ID to Circulation Desk staff when you are ready to check out.

Students and staff must first request a borrowing card at the circulation desk of their home institution.

  • EMU students and staff, fill out the U-M Library Request Form for EMU students and staff The EMU Halle Library circulation department will send your request to the Hatcher Library circulation department. Once your card is ready, you will receive an email from the Hatcher Library circulation department. Please make sure to take your EMU ID to pick up your card at Hatcher Library.
  • U-M students and staff, give the EMU Library Request Form for U-M students and staff to the circulation desk at the U-M Hatcher Graduate Library or the U-M Flint Thompson Library. They will send the request to the EMU Halle Library circulation department. We will make your card and let you know when it is ready. Please make sure to take your U-M ID to pick up your card at Halle Library.

Reciprocal borrowing requests may take up to 72 hours to process. 

Borrowing Privileges and library cards for students and staff are valid for the current term, and can be renewed by visiting the Circulation Desk of your home institution.

Responsibilities

  • Most items circulate for three weeks and may be renewed unless requested by another borrower.
  • Items must be returned to the institution from which they were borrowed.
  • Failure to follow guest borrowing policies and procedures may result in sanctions or termination of privileges from either or both institutions.
