Biography

Scott Fults’ path to Linguistics began at Eastern Michigan University in the fall of 1997 in a most unlikely manner. His original intent was to enter Eastern's Teacher Certification Program. But after taking a class with Professor Beverley Goodman, his path changed for good. After completing her class, Scott states, “I asked her for a letter of recommendation and she [jokingly] told me she would only write one for linguistics.” After talking over the possibility with Professor T. Daniel Seely, and receiving a job offer from Professor Helen Aristar-Dry, Scott took the plunge into the deep end of Linguistics in the fall of 1998.

He couldn’t have found a better program to stumble into. The program has a nurturing environment, filled with people who are actively interested in and supportive of individual endeavors. The faculty is noted not only for their amazing support of their students, but they also come with some pretty impressive credentials. Scott says, “There are a wide variety of specialties among the small faculty. Each of the faculty members is a great teacher and wonderful mentor . . . they seem to enjoy their teaching, meeting with [and] supporting students in general.”

Scott recently completed a PhD in Linguistics at the University of Maryland (UMD), and is currently working as a Research Associate in the CMPS-Institute for Advanced Computer Studies at UMD. He credits his current success to the fantastic faculty support at EMU.  “I couldn’t have entered a program like the one at the University of Maryland without the folks at EMU. The program at EMU is a great stepping stone to a PhD program . . . in fact, it’s a good stepping stone to the top PhD programs in the country.”
