Graduate Admissions

Prospective students should contact the Admissions office for full information about graduate admission. A Graduate Application for Admission must be completed (either paper or on-line) and submitted to the Graduate School by the applicable deadline. In addition, prospective students should refer to the department's Graduate Student Handbook or contact the English Department graduate advisor, Christine Neufeld (phone: 734-487-2670, email: cneufeld@emich.edu) for additional requirements of the English Department. The English Department has created an Admissions Checklist to assist with the admissions process.

In addition to meeting the Graduate School admission requirements, the English Department requires:

  1. Applicants must have at least 24 hours of undergraduate English, excluding freshman composition, and a GPA of at least 3.0. Applicants not meeting these standards may apply for conditional admission.

  2. Non-native speakers of English must have a Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL PBT) score of 587, TOEFL iBT of 95, an IELTS score of 7.0 in all categories, a PEARSON score of 62 or an 80 on the Michigan English Language Assessment Battery (MELAB), and pass the Test of Written English (TWE) with a minimum score of 5. Students with TWE scores below 5 will be denied admission; students with TOEFL scores lower than 587 can be considered for conditional admission, but must attain a score of 587 by the end of the first semester of enrollment.

  3. GRE general test scores are recommended, but not required.
