Students in the linguistics program at Eastern Michigan University are encouraged to pursue their own research and to present their findings in any of a number of different forums. The linguistics faculty are very willing and active supporters of students’ research projects. They are eager to assist students in their research and in finding an appropriate venue for presentation, so don’t hesitate to talk to any of them regarding your areas of interest.
On-campus opportunities to present your research and projects include:
Both of these events occur in March of each year. Students who wish to participate in either of these events must be sponsored by a faculty member; the nomination form and the student’s abstract are due in January.
Many of our students have also presented their research at various conferences, including:
- the Linguistic Society of America annual meeting (held at a different location around the country in January of each year)
- the Michigan Linguistics Society annual meeting (occurring each October at a sponsoring Michigan university)
Abstracts for these conferences are due some months in advance of the meetings, so be sure to check on submission deadlines. Information about other conferences may be found on The LINGUIST List site.
A great way to practice for a conference presentation is to present your paper at an ‘in-house’ colloquium for the members of EMU’s linguistic program. Faculty, visiting scholars, and students are all welcome to request such a meeting to practice for a more formal presentation, or just to share interesting research. Interested students should contact a linguistics faculty member to schedule a presentation.
Funding may be available to assist graduate students with costs associated with their research and/or travel through funds administered by the Graduate College
- Graduate Student Conference Travel Fund is intended to defray costs to present at a local, state, or international conference a juried paper or poster related to the student’s thesis or dissertation research.
Contact the Graduate College for more information on available funding.
