The Extraposition of OS Relative Clauses

The acquisition of relative clauses is one of the most interesting areas within the research of first language acquisition. This presentation will focus on the acquisition of OS (object, subject) relative clause sentences since children seem to have difficulties in processing such. OS relative clauses are clauses where the object of the main clause is simultaneously the subject of the relative clause. In our research we examined two important issues that were overlooked in earlier studies of such clauses: first, the ambiguity of the target sentences between the restrictive and non-restrictive reading and, second, the possibility of the extraposition of the relative clause. We believe that these issues are crucial for the analysis of studies in the acquisition of relative clause sentences. We also believe that it would allow us to explain the results achieved in previous studies that were discarded as invalid.
