This presentation argues that participial clauses present unique challenges to generative transformational grammar as currently formulated and proposes modifications and extensions of transformational grammar to accommodate certain properties of these clauses. Remaining properties of participial clauses are argued to follow from a hypothesized relation between core syntax and what is termed Stylistic Grammar and larger implications of these proposals are discussed.
