The English language was introduced to the indigenous people of New Zealand, the Maori, during British colonization in the 1700's. When differing languages come into contact, after prolonged interaction, they often borrow words and other grammatical features from one another. This presentation provides a brief sketch of the phonology of Maori and gives details of the phonological processes by which English loan words are modified when borrowed into Maori. |
