Preliminary investigation of the speech of five nations of northern Idaho indicates that dialects spoken in this region differ phonetically from Standard American English in a number of ways. This presentation will illustrate some of the distinctive features of Idaho Panhandle English, including vowel centralization and mergers of certain vowel sounds, using audio recordings of northern Idaho dialect speakers. A brief explanation of the methodology used to collect the data will also be included. |
