This presentation explores aspects of the Tlingit culture and language. The Tlingits are an indigenous culture in the northwest United States and Canada. Due to several factors, including U.S. government policies regarding Native American languages and cultures, the Tlingit language has been nearly decimated in less than three generations. Today there are an estimated 300 native speakers of the language all of whom are over 50 years of age. This paper discusses the history, the current status, and the efforts that are being made to preserve and revive the Tlingit language. |
