A language exists today in the United States that is less than 200 years old, yet is a native language: American Sign Language (ASL). It is seeing increased interest from the Linguistic community, both in its culture and in its teaching in public schools. Surprisingly, ASL is being taught as a foreign language although most users are United States citizens. This presentation will discuss the historical development of ASL and describe various aspects of its syntactic structure. |
