This research project studies first language acquisition of theta-role assignment in participial adjectives. Interestingly, adults interpret the sentence “the thrown man” as something throwing the man rather than as the man throwing something. This reveals how deeply ingrained the relevant grammatical concept is. The central focus of this pilot study is to ask whether children approach the role assignment task with similar ease. The results of a study proper will potentially engender broad implications for linguistic theory in general, especially in language acquisition and morpho-syntax. |
