The Treaty of Waitangi, written by British officials and signed by Maori chiefs in 1840, is considered the most important document in New Zealand history. Controversy has erupted in recent years concerning the differences between the English version and the Maori translation as signed. Through linguistic analysis, I translated the Maori version as signed and compared it with the English version to examine any disparities. This presentation will discuss the results of my analysis. |
