Bajan, Language or Pidgin?
This paper considers the hypothesis that Bajan (a.k.a. Barbadian English) is a pidgin rather than a dialect of English and describes some of the characteristics that differentiate it from standard English. Extended contact between English and different African languages brought by slaves plus various simpler forms found in Bajan could be seen as supporting evidence for this hypothesis. Multiple negatives, replacement of /_/ by /t/ and subject pronouns instead of possessive pronouns are some of the features discussed. |
