This presentation reveals ways in which linguistics can inform the teaching of language arts. Linguists have developed sophisticated scientific theories of language use and learning. Although we often treat language science and language arts as wholly separate fields of study, I argue that a knowledge of linguistics can help teachers search for a definition of “standard English” and recognize attitudes that underlie linguistic prejudice. Furthermore, I suggest that such knowledge can serve to dissolve certain longstanding conflicts in alternative views of the teaching of writing, specifically the “whole language” view and its competitors. |
