Compounding in Vietnamese

Although many believe that Vietnamese words are all single syllables, studies show that words in Vietnamese actually tend towards two parts with individual meanings that combine to create a new lexical entity. The individual components of compounds, which can often be reversed without affecting meaning, can be complementary words, reduplications to represent intensifications or specific parts to represent a generalized whole. This presentation examines the use of imagery, reversibility and reduplications in Vietnamese compounding.
