Although many believe that Vietnamese words are all single syllables, studies show that words in Vietnamese actually tend towards two parts with individual meanings that combine to create a new lexical entity. The individual components of compounds, which can often be reversed without affecting meaning, can be complementary words, reduplications to represent intensifications or specific parts to represent a generalized whole. This presentation examines the use of imagery, reversibility and reduplications in Vietnamese compounding. |
