A sentence like "You saw Who?", where there is a primary stress on "who," is referred to as an "echo question." This type of question is found in many languages around the world, and it has many unique properties. The term "echo" comes from the fact that these questions are referencing a previous utterance. Both the internal structures of echo questions and the processes used in their formation are very different from those in typical "wh-" questions. This presentation explores how echo questions are formed with reference to "wh-" movement and focus, examining their internal structure and pointing out how their unique properties shed light on the current theory of syntax.
