An imperative is a sentence that serves as a command, request or permission. Imperatives have distinct properties in syntax that make their construction unique. But unlike their more commonly studied counterparts - declaratives (statements) and interrogatives (questions) - not much research has been done on the syntax of imperatives. This presentation points to the central, internal characteristics of imperatives sentences, using key formal components of current linguistic theory to explain them.
