3rd ANNUAL EDUCATIONAL LEADERSHIP RESEARCH SYMPOSIUM

CENTRAL MICHIGAN UNIVERSITY MARCH 24TH 2010

12:00PM TO 4:30PM

WELCOME

Message from the President

Greetings and welcome to the Michigan Association of Professors of Educational Administration (MAPEA) website.

MAPEA has been a viable organization since March of 1968, actively promoting educational leadership as a profession and supporting the professional growth of professor of education programs in the State of Michigan. Institutional memberships are available, allowing each of the professors in the department of educational administration/leadership to be members.

We meet twice a year at the Michigan Association of School Boards conference room, located at 1001 Centennial Way, Lansing 48197. On March 24, 2010 our organization will host the annual Educational Leadership Research Symposium at Central Michigan University. The MAPEA will meet at 10:00 a.m. and the symposium will follow. This year we will hear from State of Michigan Superintendent of Public Instruction, Mike Flanagan. Graduate students will present their research studies in sessions that follow afterward. Information about this event is available by contacting Dr. Susan Printy, sprinty@msu.edu. We hope you will encourage your graduate students to share their research in this exciting forum.

Important to our organization is the development of the Superintendent and Central Office certification that is still being discussed and drafted at the Michigan Department of Education. Information regarding the Race for the Top money has caused the efforts for this certification to be somewhat stalled, and we wait for updates this spring that will inform us as to what is expected to be fully compliant in producing programs that meet the needs of aspiring central office administrators. We expect that Dr. Jim Berry, professor at EMU will lead us through the technical workshops, sponsored by the Wallace Grant at WMU that will help professors navigate the information of administrative certification and application for accreditation.

The MAPEA executive board is comprised of Dr. Gary Marx, Assistant Professor at EMU; Dr. Bonnie Beyer, Professor at U of M Dearborn, and past president, Dr. John Shinsky, Associate Professor at Grand Valley State University. Additionally, Dr. Jim Berry at EMU is the Executive Director of the National Council of Professors of Educational Administration (NCPEA), our parent organization. With Jim’s help, we have secured a vital link with this dynamic professional organization. We encourage you to consider submitting conference proposals, and attending the annual NCPEA conference that will be held in Washington, D.C. from August 2-6 at the Hyatt Regency. You can find links to NCPEA on the MAPEA website. Our Michigan coalition has been growing in recent years and we hope that you will be among that constituency.

Please feel welcome to contact any of MAPEA board members on topics that are important to you. We are here to serve you in this organization and help create leadership programs that inspire and transform educational institutions.

On behalf of the entire MAPEA organization, I welcome you to membership and our meetings.

Sincerely,

Caryn Wells, Ph.D.
