June 2003
Aerial photographs of campus and surrounding
areas have been added to the Campus
Views / Maps section of the site.
The design team has been busy reviewing and assimilating
the information gathered in the inventory and analysis stage of
the master planning effort. The team is now developing a conceptual
framework to organize possible master planning alternatives. Preliminary
site planning principles, derived from the overall goals of the
master plan, guide the development of this framework. These principles
include improved campus quality, effective use of assets
and respect for the campus’ setting, which includes the
range of perspectives offered by the focus groups. The Campus
Studio and Pollack Design will continue to frame alternatives
during June.
Midwestern
Consulting has completed a preliminary traffic analysis of
the perimeter streets and based on peak hour traffic counts (4-5
pm); the surrounding streets are functioning without significant
problems. The next step will be to try a few options to modify
current circulation systems, analyzing how the options affect
the overall traffic movements. This “testing” of the system will
occur as various master plan alternatives are developed.
Finally, Quinn
Evans has developed criteria for evaluation of selected buildings
to determine their role, if any, in the long term vision of the
campus. Buildings suggested for review include Briggs, Bowen,
Brown-Munson, Jones-Goddard, King, Rackham, Strong and the Heating
Plant.
