Early discussions about how growth can occur on campus have resulted in a series of options that focus on academic growth extending to the north and west, with most growth occurring east of Oakwood. Based on a modest increase in the student population over the next 20-30 years, the Facilities Planning Team (FPT) concluded that main (East) Campus can support future academic growth through renovation, infill and new construction. Based on this mindset, the design team has been concentrating on furthering preliminary options A, B and C, which were discussed at the 14 July Facilities Planning Committee workshop.

The FPT preferred attributes of each option as follows:

  1. circulation patterns of internal and external campus roads including the re- alignment of Oakwood;
  2. building distribution that increases the density of the campus core and proposes a new academic core to the north of the new University Center and University Park; and
  3. garden terraces connecting the historic core of campus to the new University Center, University Park and a proposed academic core to the north.

The FPT has been considering a mindset that there is an East and West Campus, to imply that each is of value for its distinctness. In this spirit, it is important that each campus have a clear mission and identity to minimize the perceived distance between them.

Preliminary planning for West Campus has focused on growing the campus from within by building on athletic-related academic programs and collegiate activities; a pedestrian circulation system that unifies collegiate and intramural athletic facilities; and internal campus roads that recognize Hewitt as a primary external thoroughfare. The internal circulation is an attempt to minimize traffic on perimeter streets and control traffic on campus by creating a series of road segments, rather than through roads.

Concurrent with preliminary master planning are the beginnings of campus enhancements that address improvements to campus entries and perimeter streets. The enhancements are more detailed, and could be implemented in 2-5 years, depending on available funding. Preliminary thoughts for the Corporate Education Center, the Business School and "East" and "West" Campuses will be shared at the September 18 open campus meeting.
