Performance Overview

We have been taught and trained to believe that America is the land of opportunity and freedom, but it is hard to agree as the values we cling to are becoming obsolete. We examine the injustices in our society as individuals, but we don't always speak up about them as a community. CloseUp will speak up and speak out about some of those injustices in our society, and create a space for the audience members to think, feel, question and hopefully take action.

Background of CloseUp Theatre Troupe

CloseUp Theatre Troupe was founded in 1997 by Jessica "Decky" Alexander, a professor in the Communication, Media and Theater Arts Department at EMU. The troupe has performed each year to over 7000 audience members for twenty years at EMU, as well as at a number of universities across the country.

Students audition to be selected as members of the troupe, and the majority of the troupe members are NOT majoring in communication, media or theater arts. Over the life of the troupe, more than 180 students have been members in CloseUp. Each high impact, high energy show is written and performed by EMU's own student theatre troupe, along with support from the CloseUp Theatre Troupe Director.

There have been only three directors of the theatre troupe over the 20 years that the troupe has existed. They include: Jessica "Decky" Alexander, Gayle Hurn and the current director, Britney Winn.
