Department permission is not required to register for most music courses. You may register yourself online as you do for other courses. There are some exceptions, however, and they are listed below.
1. If you wish to enroll in both Wind Symphony and Symphonic Band in the same semester, you can register for one of the two ensembles on your own, but it will require department permission to register for the other. This has nothing to do with departmental restrictions. Rather, Banner, the online registration system, is not able to handle "duplicate" registrations (students registered for two sections of the same course – in this case MUSC 249) without departmental permission.
2. The same applies for students wishing to enroll in more than one "jazz" course in the same semester. Jazz Ensemble, Jazz Combos, and Vocal Jazz all share the same course number (MUSC 244), so students can register for one course on their own, but will require department permission to enroll in a second or third "jazz" course.
3. Students who have tested out of a course prerequisite must get department permission to "override" the prerequisite. This situation is most likely to occur in sequential piano, music theory, and aural skills classes.
4. Students who entered under an "old" program (Master of Arts) or a program that has undergone extensive curricular revisions (Music Therapy) will need department permission in cases in which course prerequisites have been altered.
5. All music composition lessons have retained department permission.
6. MUSC 247 Woodwind Ensemble (Flute Choir) has retained department permission.
Note: The Course Authorization Request form will continue to be used to request department permission. (Click link to download)
Students will register themselves for ensembles based on their "best guess" of audition results. Once auditions are complete, ensemble directors will compare audition results to class lists and provide the Music and Dance office with the names of students needing to be dropped from, or added to, their classes. The Department of Music and Dance will make the necessary adjustments; students will not need to do so.
IMPORTANT: You must have a declared music major (MEDI, MEDV, MPRF, MUTR, or MUSC) to register for music classes; music "intent" is not sufficient. Please check your my.emich account to confirm your music major status. If you need to declare or change your major, please contact Dr. David Pierce (dpierce@emich.edu), Coordinator of Music Advising, immediately.
