Principal Instrument/Voice Audition

  • It is preferred that you audition in person at EMU. However, applicants who live more than 300 miles from Ypsilanti can send in an unedited, continuous recording (CD or DVD) in lieu of a live audition (click here for more information).
  • All students will be considered for a music award or scholarship. Priority scholarship consideration for the 2013-14 academic year will be given to students who audition no later than March 15, 2013.

List the selection(s) you expect to perform on your principal instrument/voice at your audition:

  • Accompanists are not required for instrumental auditions, but are required for voice auditions. Vocalists may bring their own accompanist or one will be provided. Vocalists should contact the Department of Music and Dance at: rpeavler@emich.edu no later than one week prior to auditions if they plan to bring an accompanist.

Secondary Instrument/Voice Audition

A secondary instrumental/voice audition is required only of guitar and keyboard principals applying for the Bachelor of Music Education degree (MEDI or MEDV). For more information, click here. All other applicants should skip this section.

Guitar and keyboard principals applying for the Bachelor of Music Education - Vocal degree (MEDV) will automatically be scheduled for a secondary voice audition.

Piano Placements

Piano study is a part of every major or minor curriculum. Students with limited or no previous keyboard experience may choose not to take the piano placement exam and will be assigned to a beginning piano class. Students with previous piano study are encouraged to take the piano placement exam and should prepare a representative piano selection to play. Students who are auditioning with piano, organ, or harpsichord as their principal instrument do not take the piano placement.

Music Theory Assessment Exams

All prospective music students take a music theory assessment exam. These exams are given on regulary scheduled audition days. For more information, click here.

  • Basic Theory Assessment Exam: for individuals who have not studied music theory at the college level.
  • Advanced Theory Placement Exam: for individuals who have studied music theory at the college level who would like to possibly place into a higher level of theory instruction. Transfer student who elect not to take the Music Theory Advanced Placement Exam are required to take the Basic Theory Assessment Exam.
