Baritone Robert Peavler is currently Associate Professor of Voice at Eastern Michigan University. A native of Traverse City, MI, he received his undergraduate degree in Choral Music Education from Central Michigan University and both a Masters of Music and Doctor of Music in Vocal Performance from Florida State University. Dr. Peavler is looking forward to the publication of his first book, The Melodies of Francis Poulenc: A Study Guide which is due to be released in early 2013.
A frequent performer, Dr. Peavler regularly performs across the country as a recitalist and soloist. He has been heard on Wisconsin Public Radio, with the Kalamazoo Symphony, and recently released his debut recording From the Heartland on Albany Records (TR1349), which features the music of Kirke Mechem, Thomas Pasatieri, Dominick Argento, and Timothy Hoekman. As a champion of American art song, Dr. Peavler has recently presented recitals featuring this music at the University of North Carolina-Charlotte, Wingate University, Albion College, Grand Valley State University, and Kerrytown Concert House. He is looking forward to performing with Musique 21 in November, and participating in Traverse City's annual Messiah Sing in early December.
He is a frequent adjudicator for solo ensemble festivals and competitions and is in high demand as a clinician in the public schools. He has presented sessions on practice techniques and diction for singers at the Michigan Music Conference in Grand Rapids, MI.
Dr. Peavler is the current Michigan District Governor of the National Association of Teachers of Singing (NATS). He was also a state board member in Wisconsin, served as Auditions Coordinator and Host for the 2009 Eastern Region Conference and Student Auditions, been a participant of the NATS Foundation Intern Program, and published in the Journal of Singing.
As a member of the College Music Society (CMS), Dr. Peavler has served on the CMS National Committee for Music in Higher Education and the Committee for Academic Citizenship. He was a member of the three-member panel discussion "University Life as a Professor: Preparing DMA/Ph.D. Students for Navigating University Life, Cultures and Environments" at the 2009 CMS National Convention and on the panel “Academic Citizenship in the Fine Art of Communication” at the 2010 CMS National Convention.
Prior to joining the EMU faculty, Dr. Peavler taught at Indiana University of Pennsylvania, University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point, Columbus State University, Chicago State University, and College of Du Page. He has served as a vocal instructor and staff choir conductor at Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp, as well as on the staff of the New York State Summer School for the Arts (NYSSSA) Choral Studies Program as a voice teacher and opera director. Dr. Peavler’s students consistently place at the top of their divisions in state and regional auditions and he is proud of their contributions as music teachers and professional singers across the country.
