Music Therapy Equivalency Certificate

This option is for students with a music degree from an National Association of Schools of Music accredited institution (or an equivalent institution outside of the United States) who wish to complete specialized studies that will lead to meeting the eligibility requirements to take the certification examination in music therapy administered by the Certification Board for Music Therapists.

Students seeking this equivalency do NOT need to complete the “Piano Placements” and “Music Theory Assessment Exams” portions of the Department of Music and Dance online application (they are exempted from these portions of the admissions process). Students who do not need or wish to enroll in applied music do not need to take a principal instrument/voice audition and should NOT complete the “Audition” portion of the application. Only those students needing or wishing to enroll in applied music should do so. The applied music audition, if selected, is for placement purposes only and does not determine acceptance into the program.

Students wishing to pursue the Music Therapy Equivalency Certificate are strongly encouraged to contact Professor Michael McGuire (mmcguire@emich.edu ) for more information prior to completing the online application.
